Christoph Thiers on SoundBetter

>10 years experience in recording, mixing and mastering. Certified Dolby Atmos Music Studio.

I don't limit myself to a specific genre or format. I believe that every project is unique and valuable - whether folklore or heavy metal, vinyl or streaming, stereo or Dolby Atmos. However, I strongly believe that a distinct sound is important for any kind of musical project to be able to stand out and build long-term success. I prefer to see artists as a whole and it's important to me that the musical works fit into the overall picture of the artist brand.

Interview with Christoph Thiers

  1. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  2. A: Immersive mixing is not "upmixing"! Even when starting from a stereo original, we usually start from 10-30 stems and/or single tracks and rebuild the whole mix and sound aesthetics to make it work and outgrow itself in the immersive realm. For best results though, consider all three dimensions in the whole production process to unlock the full potential - game changer!

  3. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  4. A: Sade! Awesome group with an awesome sound! I admire how they have evolved over the years, always developing their roots.

  5. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  6. A: No secret but important: Get it right at the source! While we can fix some things later, the results will always be way better if you don't postpone necessary fixings.

  7. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  8. A: Mostly Pop and Rock as well as Trap and Hip Hop. I enjoy doing metal, jazz or classical a lot as well though!

  9. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  10. A: A set of experienced and well-trained ears for both the details and the whole picture, an enormous amount of passion and the will to add maximum value to each and every project.

  11. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  12. A: My main setup at ThreeDee Music Studio is a 7.2.4 speaker setup comprised of Amphion speakers, powered by Amphion amps and an Avid MTRX Studio. The room acoustics are superb and translate extremely well, thanks to various passive and active bass traps and absorbers and professional planning & measurement. I use Avid Dock and Avid S1 to expand my workflow. I usually work on ProTools but I'm confident in Cubase and Logic as well. When it comes to hybrid mixing or recording I work with renowned studio facilities like Abbey Road Studios, .

  13. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  14. A: Nowadays it's mostly online mixing and mastering and immersive mixing for label clients.
