Aly is very devoted to his craft and is a very cool and friendly person to work with. He's patient, talented, open-minded, and detail-oriented, all of which combine to make a great final product. A great experience -- I look forward to working with him again on future projects.

Interview with Amadeus

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I worked on a film in 2014, producing the sound track. The film was awarded trop fest 2nd ranking in Dubai. The production was so diverse, with ethnic music from Africa as well as Balkan influenced music. I also recorded this in my studio myself, it was a great exprience.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: Composing for a documentary film

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Noah Lifchey, he is a great mixing engineer and an awesome bass player.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Analog if there is a big arrangement Digital for smaller arrangements.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: I will do my best to achieve your goals, I will manage the project and communicate clearly where we are and where we want to be and above all with focused and accurate execution.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: Everything about music is a gift.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: What is your flat rate? I typically answer asking what do they want to do, tell me more about the project and we go from there.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: That producers just take any project. If I send a proposal this means I really am inspired by what you do already. As mentioned I sometimes end up publishing the works I produce.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: Well first, why are they doing this, what is their story? Then about the work, what do they want to achieve? What message do they want to convey? Is there a sound they already have in mind? Are there any preferences for instrumentation? If they are hiring me for singing, I really focus on knowing the emotional context of the song and discuss the lyrics, most of my questions are in that area.

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Other than making sure your producer is talented and caring for the project, look for a producer with great project management and communication skills.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: Ocarina,Guitar, piano, drums, oud. And also I would pack lots of chocolate, I might never come back :)

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I have been doing this for 22 years. I started as a rock musician in Egypt, then after touring Europe I opened my studio in the Middle East. I worked on hundreds of projects for artists and film makers and ad agencies until recently I moved to Los Angeles where I opened my new studio and my music licensing company.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: Progressive and visionary.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: I would love to work with Muse one day, a great deal of experimentation in the studio, as well as emphasis on vocal production which as a singer I would really enjoy.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Often times as a producer you might take the decision to layer a lot of instruments. Making the best use of compression in the mixes is key here. Specially with dense mixes, side chaining can be crucial to achieve a record like quality. You can side chain the bass, which is common, but also side chain the vocals effects with the main leading instrument, lets say rhythm guitar while using a multi band compressed . This will substantially give you more space and from there you can work on automation and all other dynamic techniques for mixing.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: Rock, pop rock, classical and recently EDM

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: Project management.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: Vision and passion. In knowing the artist I like to point out where I view their uniqueness and try to passionately bring it to light in the song.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: I first like to get an idea about the artist or the client and what needs to be achieved. I then propose a workflow based on the goals agreed in our discussion. Typically I send up to three initial drafts for review and work towards finalizing the project with the client from there.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: SSL Grand Studio Logic - 88 Keys Neumann U87 Avalon VT737 Ibanez S Series Cordoba Classical Guitars Yamaha NS10 Akai MPC 61 Plethora of plugins for : Drums, Strings, full orchestra

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: I am a fan of Quincy Jones, Finneas, Andy Wallas, Gus Oberg, Marc Carolan, Nigel Godrich as producers. I admire the unique sound of Radiohead, The strokes, Aurora and melody making of the greats like Scorpions, Queen and the golden pop era - Abba, Beegees. I also love the sound of Tame Impala, Pink Floyd, Gong and the doors.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: Vocals, guitars, orchestration and music production. For clients that want their music to be used in Ads, I pitch their music to agencies and music supervisors through my licensing company.
