Denny on SoundBetter

My name's Denny and I'm hella cool. You may not be able to tell by looking at me, but I can rap very well. I write until I give myself goosebumps. My main goal with my songs is to make my mother gasp from the thoughtfulness and/or inappropriateness of my lyrics. Don't worry, the rhythm and flow is there as well.

I was tested for sleep apnea at 8 years old. Thankfully I don't have it, but I have always had trouble sleeping, which lead to countless hours watching music videos on MTV and VH1. My love for rap and hip-hop started at a young, sleep deprived age when All Falls Down by Kanye West and My Band by D12 would frequently blast on my television at 2:30am. I've been writing since my freshman year of high school and have fully committed ever since. I like telling stories with intrinsic cadences and rhyme schemes and I'm eager to work with various artists and professionals across the industry.

I'd love to hear about your project. Click the 'Contact' button above to get in touch.

Interview with Denny

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: My EP "Wonder Land". It was the first cohesive project I've ever released and it was an incredible reflection of where I was at that point in my life.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I'm releasing a mixtape that is rereleasing some old songs and introducing some new ones. I needed some stuff remixed/remastered so now there will be a more consistent sound with most of my songs, as well as giving my fans some new stuff for their ears.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Devmo

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Digital, it's easier.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: I'm efficient and cost-effective and will give 110% of my attention to the project through completion.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: That it doesn't feel like a job.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: Q: How are you so good at writing? A: I have no idea. I've just been doing it for awhile and it's one of few things in life where I'm able to give myself goosebumps.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: That there's an on/off switch. As a creative and self-employed individual, there is no such thing as off.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: What are the messages and themes we're trying to portray? What's our target audience? What's our budget? What's the ideal length of the project? Anything specific that NEEDS to be in this project?

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: There are plenty of writers to choose from, but I've got the time to focus on what you want and need. My ego goes out the window when I work with a client. I am writing for YOU. A lot of writers want their voice and inflection involved in anything they produce, but I understand that you as a client already have a voice and audience you're trying to reach.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: Microphone, audio interface, laptop, piano, chargers for everything.

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I'm still on it. I've been writing and rapping since 2009, but I've been taking music and and branding more seriously over the past six years, while balancing full-time jobs and everything else life tries to throw at me. I'm currently just self-employed and focusing on building my voice, audience, and brand. As a creative, it's hard to define a career path because creativity is subjective, and we need to change with trends while staying true to our values.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: Laid-back yet stubborn. There's a calmness in my voice, but that tranquility doesn't come without tension.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: Metro Boomin. He's been able to showcase his talents across different genres and has become one of if not the biggest producers in Hip-Hop. We also went to the same high school and had a class together so it would be really cool to come full circle.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Don't be afraid to ask for help. Don't be afraid of vulnerability. As an artist, we're always learning and experimenting, and we don't know everything there is to know about our craft because it's always changing. Ignorance should be empowering, now deflating. If you don't know something, that presents a chance for you to learn something.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: Rap and Hip-Hop, which can be dissected further into Boom-Bap, Trap, Pop, Indie, etc.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: My strongest skill is developing wordplay and rhyme schemes, stuff that makes you gasp.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: I bring creative spunk and 'out of left field' ideas. I love experimenting, because nothing "works" until it works, ya know?

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: I like to analyze and assess the work I'm about to dive into. I will bullet-point rhythms, concepts, flows, themes, etc. until I have a good 'skeleton' structure for the song, then I will write the lyrics in stanzas backtrack when necessary.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: I currently don't have my own but I utilize professionals. My favorite person to work with is my brother, Drew Brodsky, who worked at Shock City Studios in St. Louis, MO for two years and is now working on independent projects but still connects at Shock City when needed. I also work at two home studios in St. Louis, with Christian DuMey (ties to Atlantic) and Tyler "Upside" Smith. Christian splits time between St. Louis and Los Angeles, where he records at Melrose Sounds Studios, while Tyler creates studio-quality sound from the comfort of his own home.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: Musically, Mac Miller and Biggie Smalls have inspired me more than anything. Mac was an all encompassing type of artist that could divulge between genres seamlessly. Biggie could lyrically float along any beat imaginable, and unfortunately didn't get to interact with the forms of modern rap.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: Ghostwriting. Clients come to me when they have an idea for a song or jingle and I bring it to life with wordplay, rhythm, and rhyme schemes.
