As a mastering engineer, I draw from my professional experience of 20+ years as a pro songwriter, performer and producer. Because each master is the final version of a recording, it's important to make sure that the frequency and dynamic signature of every master is customized to appeal to its audience. For instance, modern roots/blues recordings have remarkably different frequency and dynamic qualities from pop and urban records. As a mastering engineer, I customize the "finish" of each recording to make sure that its sonic signature appeals to fans. Once the recording has been professionally equalized and volume matched, the audience can focus exclusively on the most important part: the music!
