Interview with Madeline Smith

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I am extremely proud of my projects as a solo artist. I was the songwriter and vocalist. I loved that I could sing my songs and convey my emotions.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I am currently working on a country demo as well as a classical demo!

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: I just joined SoundBetter so I have not been able to meet anyone just yet.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: I can go either way. I think it depends on the sound you want. Analog will give you a lot more warmth in the song.

  9. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  10. A: I love that it gives me some creativity as well as some structure.

  11. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  12. A: They most commonly ask me if I can release the song through my channels and my entertainment company. Unfortunately because of legal contracts, I am unable to do so.

  13. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  14. A: The biggest misconception is that I just sing what is on the lyric sheet. It is definitely not that simple. Most people will write a vocal melody line, but there are many adjustments that need to be made in order to really make the song special... The vocal melody line never really adjusts for rhythm, sway, breathing, a professional touch, etc. so I have to work with it to make sure it is still what the client wants, yet sounds very professional.

  15. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  16. A: I normally ask prospective clients what they want this song to sound like, their time frame, how complex they want it to be, etc.

  17. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  18. A: The most helpful thing a prospective customer can do is provide the track with a scratch vocal. It just helps us understand more exactly what you want in the song.

  19. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  20. A: As a singer, I just need my voice... so I would be the one bringing food instead of gear.

  21. Q: How would you describe your style?

  22. A: Pop meets country with an R&B flair.

  23. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  24. A: I would love to work with so many people, but dead or alive I would want to work with Johnny Cash. He is just such an amazing writer and performer.

  25. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  26. A: The client will definitely get a much better song if he leaves some creativity up to the vocalist and doesn't chart out the vocal melody to a T.

  27. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  28. A: I love everything from pop to country to R&B. The vocalists and musicians that inspire me are a very long list but include Martina McBride, Alicia Keys, Beyonce, Tim McGraw, etc.

  29. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  30. A: You will be 100% satisfied. We have never had an unhappy client.

  31. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  32. A: I have been performing as an artist for many years and do demos on the side.

  33. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  34. A: Country, Pop, and Rock are normally what I work on, however occasionally it is Dance, Top 40, and R&B.

  35. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  36. A: Delivering exactly what the client asks for.

  37. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  38. A: We bring excellence and passion to every song we record. We strive to make the song exactly what you want!

  39. Q: What's your typical work process?

  40. A: Our typical work process greatly differs depending on what service we are providing.

  41. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  42. A: We record everything in a well known local studio that does great work.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: The most common work I do is vocal demos. We do everything from just vocals to creating the music for a song, doing acoustic demos, or doing full band demos.
