Interview with Dennis Hartley
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Listen and use your ears! If it's good, it's good! Don't confuse perfection with nature or art!
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I'm working on my solo album and another album for the band Burning Black. Not the band from Italy or France "or where ever they are from". I have been an original member and worked with this band for 10+ years.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I promise to do what I say. If I can't do something...I will tell them.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: I would ask what they were looking for and a timeline. If I don't understand something I will ask for more instruction.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: I would consider my style to be kind of a Heavy, Bluesy, Neo Classical Southern flair kinda thang!? I can do other genres as well. My dad say's it's actually "Neo Hillbilly Slam Grass"! So I'll go with what my dad says!
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I love to play a lot of different music. I play some bluegrass banjo, classical guitar, blues, jazz, metal, Neo classical, new age, rock and even some old country music.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: I am technically proficient with performance and creativity.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: My work flow is to get an idea of what my customer wants by instruction. I can also assist in creating/writing if needed. Once I know the scope of work, I start rehearsing, recording until I get a finished product.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: My studio set up is growing. I have a Mac. I use Studio One 5.5 Professional and can record 16 tracks simultaneously. I have some outboard compressors, effects, patch bays Etc. I have a Production Controller. I have an assortment of dynamic and condenser Mics (enough to mic entire bands with ease). I have a lot of plugins. Too many instruments, amps and equipment to list.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Not at this time. I'm new to this site but I intend on updating my response.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: I'm not really sure? You would have to ask someone else. I just play music.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I play guitar, bass or other instruments to accommodate the music by following direction and/or creating parts as needed.
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I've enjoyed everything I have had the privilege to be a part of. My role is writing music, playing music, sharing music, and having an awesome time with all the people I work with and play for. Music is my life!
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: I love and use both. I love analog for the vintage creamy sounds. I love the clarity of digital and the ease of use. Digital has come a long way and is progressing fast. Some of the digital stuff is really close at emulating analog equipment.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I love to play music and collaborate with other like minded people. I'm always wanting to learn more!
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: They ask if I wanna play music and I say yes.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Give clear instructions and scope of work desired.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: I would take an acoustic guitar, acoustic bass, banjo, mandolin and harmonica.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: My path was and still is to still make beautiful music. I've been playing music since I was a little kid but decided to get more involved 34 years ago.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: If this genius could still be living today, I would love to work with Johann Sebastian Bach. He is my favorite musician ever. I love his vast knowledge and composition. I listen to his music almost every day with anticipation. His music is prolific, exciting and impeccable to me.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I like to bring a very polished and unique musical flavor to a song. I can repeat riffs, chorus and verses if that's what is desired but, I prefer a more composed structure with emotion and feel for the song. I'm super picky about timing, tuning and accurate performance.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: The list of musicians and music production professionals that inspire me would be too long. Technically, I'm inspired by everything I've heard.
