Mark Roman on SoundBetter

Bassist with 15+ years studio experience, songwriter’s sensibilities & a keen ear for production value. Recording credits as a bassist include: Jz James (A Great Notion) Elijah Tucker (Saturn) Hee Young (So Sudden) Danica Dora (Lonely You) Joe Wulff (ghost under Water) Preslisa (There’s So Much World to See) & many more.

Recording upright bass is a very particular skill. From the mysterious role of mic placement & proximity effect on bowed bass to choosing the appropriate instrument or strings for a particular recording, I’m prepared to fit the needs of projects large and small with an ear out for subtle detail.

Aside from years of experience as a working bassist, independent songwriter & co-producer in the studio, my stage credits encompass close work in various bands with members of Antibalas, The Dap-Kings, The Whitest Boy Alive, The Fuzztones, The Polyversal Souls & Lake Street Dive.

It was a great pleasure to work on my track with Mark. A strange and complex double bass part was required, and we were very lucky that Mark and I got in touch.
For me, as an artist, it is important to transfer all the feelings into the sound, and Mark captured the mood and idea of the song. I highly recommend him as a professional musician and a true artist.

Interview with Mark Roman

  1. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  2. A: I'm a big fan of two contemporary songwriters, Oliver Wood (of the Wood Brothers) & Doug Wamble. Each pairs an original approach to songwriting with a refreshingly independent production aesthetic, the basic ingredients of finding one's own voice as an artist. Randy Newman, Anders Osborne and Richard Thompson are a few others who come to mind as far as that goes. I also really admire the work of Willie Dixon. He was a bass player in Muddy Waters’ band who wrote a number of his hit songs, which were then covered by The Rolling Stones… and the rest is history.

  3. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  4. A: Butterama Recording Center in Berlin is a magical place & my home away from home - Daniel Nentwig runs the show over there. Derek Ullenboom has done some terrific work on mandolin for me in the past and both Jonathan Jetter and Kevin Blackler are great mastering engineers I know from my time living in New York.
