Interview with Kurt Stevens
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I just wrapped up recording my second EP with my producer Bobby Campbell in East Nashville and getting ready to release it sometime soon. We put our hearts into these 5 songs and I can't wait for the world to hear them.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I just released two singles in the past 6 months that I am extremely proud of. Both are an homage to where I am from (Florida) and the love I have for my home state. Aside from promoting those new songs I am always writing and growing my catalog.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Elise Kathryn. She is incredible and has sung on some of my records that I have released, one being "Seasick" which is my latest single.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: I love pulling a record out of the sleeve, dropping the needle, turning up my RCA receiver and lay on my couch with the volume cranked up. But for recording purposes, I am digital all the way. It's just way more efficient in terms of cost and time.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: To treat their project as if it were one of my own.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I love being able to create music and sing, those are two things I would do even if I wasn't doing it for a living, so I consider myself extremely blessed to be able to do so.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: "I want the vocals to sound like X artist, do you think we can achieve that?" This is usually something we talk about in the initial conversation about the song at hand and most of the time, my answer is "I will do everything to get it as close as I can".
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: A common misconception that I have found is that every songs process is the same. For me, It's all about the finished product. Some might think that it should take one or two takes to get a line right, (sometimes it does) but if I need sing a line 10 times to perfect it, then that's what I will do.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: Important questions include their prospective timeline, what style/vibe they are looking for, whether they want harmonies, etc.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: I think its important to listen to the audio clips on each profile to find the voice that you feel fits your vision the best. Finding a voice that you love that you think would fit your song is the perfect place to start.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: My Gibson songwriter deluxe acoustic guitar, my MacBook, my focusrite interface, my Sm7 microphone, and a solar powered generator.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I started playing classical piano at age 4 and focused on that until high school, where I taught myself to play guitar. When I wasn't playing classical, I was developing my singing voice with Elton John, Billy Joel, Beatles, etc. songs on the piano. When I went to FSU for college I started a band and played 3 days a week until I graduated in 2016. I moved to Nashville two weeks after graduation and have been growing my career as an artist and songwriter ever since.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: My style is a mix between mainstream and traditional country music. As an artist, I have played tons of shows where I'd sing a Blake Shelton tune and then a Waylon song, followed by one of my own. I take my 10+ years of experience singing songs from different artists into the studio with me, which is why I have the ability to be versatile with my vocal style depending on what the song needs.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Kenny Chesney has always been an inspiration of mine and I think it would be incredible to be able to work with him someday.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: As cliche as it might sound, I truly believe in the "less is more" concept when it comes to production. If the bones are good, then the sky is the limit.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I usually work on Country music but I love singing Americana and some rock as well.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: I would say that my strongest skill is as a lead vocalist.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: From day one of my singing career, I always strive to "tell the story" when I sing and I continue to strive for that. The listener should feel like the singer is singing from a real place, as if the singer lived the song themself.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I like to begin by understanding exactly what the client is looking for in terms of vibe, sound, and style, I find communication to be extremely important and I like to an open dialogue with the client to make sure that we nail their vision. From there I'll dial in the vocal performance and start the recording process.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I have a small but effective home studio setup featuring a Shure Sm7b Microphone and a focusrite interface. I recording using a MacBook Pro and Logic Pro X.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I love everything from Kenny Chesney to Jason Isbell to Bob Marley to The Beatles and everything in between. I love music that hits me on an emotional level, regardless of genre.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I am regularly hired to sing lead vocals and harmonies on demo's in Nashville, Tennessee in addition to being a songwriter.
