Interview with Cholo Hermosa
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That we can fix everything.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Trust your gut, don't get distracted by the noise. The song is king.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: My headphones, speakers, computer, and probably a gaming mouse.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I have been a music professional since I was 17. I'm 37 now. Been full time with my studio since 2016.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Hifi esque mixing styles combined with selective saturation. I always aim for that 3d sound.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Organization and accountability. I love meeting deadlines. This allows me to weigh how creative I can be with projects.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: My monitoring is where it's at. I still do hybrid mixing chains from time to time but I really spend a lot of time making my 3 monitoring setups as reliable as possible so I can trust them and meet release dates.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: The song is king.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Andrew Scheps! The man is a legend and one of the best mentors when it comes the philosophy of our craft.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Both. There's an art to curating a good hybrid system. Both analog and digital have strengths and weaknesses. Getting the best of both worlds introduce more colors to the palette.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: That I will make your songs atleast 50% better.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: The solitude and the meditation like approach to solving the problems within a song.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: I ask them about the deadline first, and then the vision.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I would love to work with Tomoo from Japan. I love how her songs are arranged and produced and I think I can add an extra flavor different to her current productions.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: These days i'm getting a lot of pop and hiphop. With my own music, I mainly do psychedellic-indie.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: 1. Get the files and check for errors with exporting. 2. Import to my own template via Logic Pro X or Pro Tools. 3. Create my own pre-mix before the actual mixing process. 4. Do my own first mix, rest then revisit for fresh ears. 5. Send to the client!
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Transformation. My frequent clients really love how I can help transform their projects to the best version of their productions. "Thanks for making us sound expensive"
