Pete Hollis on SoundBetter

Hi, I'm Pete! I live in Chicago, IL and I specialize in Retro/Dream Pop music! I am a producer, songwriter and singer. My production style brings in the moods and flavors of funk, soul, indie pop, and the sounds of the 70’s and 80’s.

I produce songs with excruciating detail to make sure every sound, instrument and arrangement is the best it can possibly be. I work with some incredible session musicians and we will work together to make sure to capture the exact sound you want. Every song I work on is special to me, so I will handle your song with care and attentiveness. Listen to the songs on my profile to get an idea of the production style that I will be bringing to your song! Don't hesitate to reach out with any questions!

Peter was such a fantastic client to work with. His positive energy was contagious. I never once felt like I was unsure of what he needed. He gave me detailed notes on what he wanted throughout the project and was always appreciative of the time and work I put in with his song.

Already looking forward to working with him on the next project! Thanks so much Peter!

Interview with Pete Hollis

  1. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  2. A: Find someone who you think you would enjoy working with :)

  3. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  4. A: My computer, a full sized midi keyboard, my interface and my Yamaha studio monitors.

  5. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  6. A: I have been songwriting and producing for over 10 years. I am a self taught drummer, singer and keyboardist, I started singing on a stage in middle school and joined a local band in high school that propelled me to explore my love of music.

  7. Q: How would you describe your style?

  8. A: My style is soulful productions with a live and human feel. Every instrument is meticulously placed to move the song forward and bring the emotion and heart to the center of the song.

  9. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  10. A: I would love to work with Rhianna one day, I think that our styles could blend into a sonic spiritual experience.

  11. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  12. A: Put in the work, be curious and always keep learning.

  13. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  14. A: My strongest skill is my work ethic and love for what I do. I'm currently a barista working to make ends meet, but at the end of the day all of my free time goes to music. I love creating songs and helping people record the records that they can hear in their head. I have been producing for nearly a decade and I have thousands of hours worth of experience building songs from scratch and turning them into release ready tracks.

  15. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  16. A: I bring a unique feel to every song, creating stories and soulfulness while maintaining catchy and memorable melodies. I like to study and listen to both old and new music in various genres to build a robust sense of how each instrument and melody contribute to a track. I am not afraid to put the hours in to put the song a step above.

  17. Q: What's your typical work process?

  18. A: I have extensive experience working with clients remotely. I work diligently to make sure that every song is the best it can possibly be. I like to have a meeting with the client (often virtual) before starting on the song so that I can get a good grasp of the vision that you have in mind for your song.

  19. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  20. A: I have worked out of my house and now apartment for the past nine years and I absolutely love it. I built my self a super computer that I can create masterpieces with no troubles. Paired with my Roland StudioCapture interface I can record up to 15 instruments at one time. I am able to record drums, keyboards, guitars and strings all in my home.

  21. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  22. A: I am inspired by too many music professionals to count. Anita Baker is my biggest inspiration for songwriting, vocals and production. She was the executive producer on many of her records and I think her production is top tier.

  23. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  24. A: I take demos from my clients and turn them into full song productions. I also write and record for myself all the time so that I can contribute melody or lyric ideas if needed.
