Interview with Marcello
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: There's simply too many to mention. I made so much great songs on Soundbetter, that it would be impossible to single out any of them.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Always doing A LOT of cool stuff. Hard to pinpoint a single project.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I ALWAYS deliver. Just check my reviews and my work. I play with my strengths, and I never had one single client unhappy. Just try me!
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: The freedom to do what I love and have the opportunity to work and create relationships with people from across the globe.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: People usually look at me and think I am just a Rock singer. Fortunately, I can sing the hell out of a rock song, but I can do a lot more than that ;)
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: Tell me all you can about your song. Make it personal, tell me your story. I want to know you, so I can deliver exactly what YOU want and not what I want.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Choosing someone to work remotely on a very personal thing as your own music is sometimes a challenging task. Expectations are always high, and you must choose someone that utterly understand and respects your work, someone that checks the ego at the door and have the presence and experience to deliver exactly what you need even if you don't know exactly what you needed in the first place! And that's exactly what you get with me.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Assuming I'll have a studio and a stage on that island 😁, I would take my Neumann mic for recordings, my Shure mix for live performances, my in-ear monitor and my custom moulded headphones. Ah...and a bottle of jack Daniels... cause it would get pretty boring in a desert island after a while..
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: Singing for as long as I can remember. Session singing as a full-time job for 10 years and loving every minute of it!
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: I am extremely versatile, and I love to explore, but my tone puts me in a contemporary rock and classic rock range and also musicals. EDM comes easily to me too.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Surround yourself with the best and most reliable people you can. They will help you shine, and you will learn from them. Choose the right equipment but don't let the equipment control you.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: You must be ready for anything and play with your strengths! I work very well, but not exclusively, with Rock, Hard Rock/Metal, EDM, Pop and Country.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Depends on the type of work. The most common is to write lyrics + melodies and record vocals. I normally lock myself in the vocal booth with the instrumental and press play. After a few rounds I start recording my ideas until I find THAT perfect melody line for the song. After that I will write the words to fit perfectly on my melodies and record a first take, usually a verse and a chorus and send over to the client to get some feedback. After that, if all is good, I will record the final take, 2 or 3 times, record all the harmony layers and then, comp, edit, make a rough mix, and send over to the client for final approval.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Most of the work I do for clients revolves around recording vocals and harmonies for songs and/or demos and creating top lines (melodies) and lyrics for songs. Lots of times the same client wants to produce instrumentals or create a song from scratch, and I have the most amazing team ready to kick ass on that department!
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Queen have always inspired me since childhood. Everything about them is magic.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Lots of amazing talent around here! Hard to pinpoint anyone but.. If you need amazing piano and brilliant keyboard arrangements, talk to Fab Jablonsky, he's the real deal. For rap, Wes Writer kills. Songwriting Team are great professionals too.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Both. Each song is a different story and analog and digital can perfectly coexist in order to serve the music.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: The most common is: - Dude, how can you hit those insane notes consistently all the time? The answer is normally: - High notes are overrated, but just in case it's needed, I keep training for it!
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Everything I am and everything I got. Always! All those years honing my skills made me passionate about what I do and love the idea that I create a gift of emotion each time I work on a song.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: I have a knack to create catchy melodies and lyrics and sing in both male and female ranges. Drop me your song and I'll deliver you a great surprise back!
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I have a personal sound treated studio built from the ground up to provide me personal access to do quality work 24 hours a day.
