Emotive, airy vocals with a hidden powerhouse. Worked with Randy Jackson, Mikal Blue (Colbie Caillat, OneRepublic), and Patrice Rushen. Songwriting is reflex. Let's make something beautiful :)
I've been writing songs and singing my entire life, and pursuing my professional career for the last six years. My songs have been placed on CMT's "Nashville," won awards in the USA Songwriting Competition & the NSAI song contest, and have been played on Beats 1 Radio, Radio Disney Country, and KFROG. Recently, SoundBetter client Somna and I had our song "Believer" signed to Armada Music and premiered on "A State of Trance" with Armin Van Buuren. I graduated in May of 2016 from USC's Popular Music program with a degree in Popular Music Performance. Looking forward to working with you!

Interview with Katie Stump
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: The song I did with the DJ Somna, called Believer, was one I was especially proud of. Not only did it end up sounding so great, but it also got signed to a dance label called Armada and played on a huge radio show called A State of Trance. It's very cool to have a very successful cut come out of a project that started on Soundbetter.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: A couple of toplines on Soundbetter, a new single for my solo artist project, and many more outside writing projects!
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Yes! Producer : Matthew Tryba Female Vocalist: Julia Laven Male Vocalist: Taylor Mathews, Kyle Reynolds
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Personally, digital. It's fast, easy, and allows me to get all my ideas down without a hassle.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: That you will be STOKED on what I deliver. And if you're not, tell me! We're working together on it, so help me understand how I can make it better for you
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Getting to be creative and make something out of nothing! And getting to share that something with people.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: What do you charge? When can you have this done? All info is on the profile :)
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That it's not a real job :)
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: 1. Do you have a hard deadline for this project? 2. Will you be taking care of the tuning/mixing of the vocals, or is that something you expect me to do? 3. What references do you have for the style of vocal/topline you want on this track?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Show me what you got! I love to hear projects before I commit to them, just to make sure I'm a good fit for it :)
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: 1. Acoustic guitar 2. Piano 3. Computer (assuming there is electricity on this desert island) 4. Mic 5. Interface
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I started doing music when I was 16, playing my songs in coffee houses for tips. Since then I've recorded and released 3 albums, written hundreds of songs, and played to audiences of up to 8,000 seats. Lots of different skills and people are attributable to what I've accomplished so far, and I can't wait to see what's next!:)
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Emotional, soaring, dark-tinged pop :)
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I would kill to work with Julia Michaels just because of how legendary of a writer she is. It would be so amazing to work with her because I feel like I would learn so much.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Never settle! You are your best coach. If you think you can get a better take, get it!
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Pop, sometimes folk or country.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Toplining/lyric writing :) it's the most fun part of the job for me!
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I tend to think that I always bring my creative A-game to a song. If I have an idea that I think could make the song better, I always like to throw it out there (with no pressure of course). My belief is that if I'm working on a creative project with someone, it's my duty to bring all the creativity I can to that project.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: If I'm writing a topline, I lock myself in my studio (usually at night), turn up the track and just let it inspire me. I ALWAYS leave the voice memo recorder on my phone running in the first couple passes of me listening to the track, because usually that's when the best stuff comes out!
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I have a studio space in my 2-bedroom apartment in Los Angeles, where I run my vocals through a Neumann TLM 103, Apogee Duet, and Pro Tools.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Childhood idols include John Mayer, Taylor Swift, and Sara Bareilles. I am always inspired by great new tastemakers as well. Max Martin is obviously an all-time producer favorite, but I'm also a huge fan of people like Ryan Tedder, Julia Michaels, and Justin Tranter.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Most commonly, my work on Soundbetter involves writing a topline, lyric, performing the vocal on the track, or all of the above! I really enjoy collaborating with positive and creative people that are open to incorporating my ideas :)
