David M. Campese on SoundBetter

I'm a solo artist and producer with nothing but music on my mind. I am classically trained and I've been travelling around Europe as a professional musician, working with other artists of the independent scene in London and Milan. I'm very versatile with all styles of music and I can't wait to work on the next project!

I graduated in Electronic Music and studied Classical Guitar at the Conservatory in Italy. I graduated in Songwriting in London and I've never stopped making music since.
I can work as a producer on your song to create an arrangement around your ideas, and as a session guitarist and/or vocalist.
I have several years of experience both in studio and on stage, which allows me to have a wider understanding of a musical project in all of its aspects. I'm open to all kinds of genres but I'm specialized in Folk, Indie/Folk music (reference: Ben Howard, Charlie Cunningham, Damien Rice, Bon Iver..).
I tend to find a balance between acoustic and electronic music in order to sound organic.
Can't wait to work with you!

Interview with David M. Campese

  1. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  2. A: My acoustic guitar, an overdrive pedal, Ableton Push, a mic, another overdrive pedal.

  3. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  4. A: I'm super quick to find a chord progression and create top lines from scratch. That comes from my experience of busking in the streets as a guitarist. After many years of playing the guitar I can provide some unique and intricate guitar recordings that can enhance your song.

  5. Q: What's your typical work process?

  6. A: If I'm on working on a production I like to have the chance to speak with the artist first in order to understand what is going on in his/her life at the moment and the vision and the message within the song. Then I proceed to listen the song and share with the artist my inputs so I can add something new and fresh to the track. If I need to record the guitar I just need some instructions on key, time and vibe and I'll be able to deliver the recordings in a couple of days max.

  7. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  8. A: I work on MacBook Pro 16'' M1Pro chip which allows me to have full power when I work on my recordings. I have a Neumann condenser mic and Shure SM7B condenser mic which I use for my recordings. I listen through Yamaha SH7 monitors and I have a bunch of midi controllers. I play with a Maton acoustic guitar, my main guitar, then I have a hand-made classical guitar from a spanish lutist and a Ibanez electric guitar.

  9. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  10. A: I developed my musical taste listening Bon Iver's records and folk in general. The balance between acoustic and electronic in Justin Vernon's work is what I always aspire to reach. More recently I fell in love with hip hop records and big productions so my goal is to create a mixture of folk and hip hop elements in my music. John Butler is the man who showed me how to play the acoustic guitar in a unique way, using open tunings, difficult fingerpicking patterns and emotional chord progressions.

  11. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  12. A: I usually work on acoustic guitar recordings. Open tunings and fingerpicking are my strength, I can also play electric and classical guitar for more peculiar sounds. I'm a full time producer and songwriter as well so I can produce and arrange your song, always with an acoustic and intimate sound in mind.

I just upgraded my audio interface with a Focusrite Clarett+ 4Pre. Game changer. Super clear pre amp and the "air" feature brightens up the sound even more!

I recently bought Vitamin from Waves..wow! Feels like cheating when you add final touches to your mix. I've tried it while mastering too. Super recommended!
