Interview with Rafael Lozano
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: During pandemic I produced a song with more than 50 friends and colleagues, remaking the track and recording voices from 8 different countries around the world. Track is on spotify called Amigos by Voces y Generaciones.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Crating beats and remixing
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Both have their charm
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What do you want people to feel when listening your song? We can start from there
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Give me the opportunity to listen what you want and what you need on your project. We can do great things together. If it does not work out, I will enjoy it and learn
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Midi controller, DAW, mic and speakers
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I have been doing music since high school, playing or performing with bands with my guitar and piano, and also singing. Just 7 years ago I started producing music by making popular songs from other artists, from scratch, recreating everything, except for the voice, for others to record it. When pandemics hit us, I lost my job so I started studying in Pointblank Music School in London, music production masters diploma, so in the last 3 years I decided to make music production my full time job and life.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Fresh, Casual, Relaxed, and tastefull
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Any artist have something to say deliver with his/her music, and I can help with it
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Don't start producing or creating, by focusing on volume. Dynamics will come up later in the process. Also, when creating a song, don't think on what you like or the audience like, but on how you want them (and you) to feel when listening to that song.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Recently EDM, but ballad, rock, R&B, Hip Hop, Latin, Regaeton also work for me
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Musical background and correctness on music composition. Scales, Tempo, Structure and "sabor". I am proudly colombian with latin spirit and rythm
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Harmonies and some times melodies. Sometimes I am lucky enough to come up with lyrics but for that I prefer collaborators
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I get inspired outside the studio in my day by day routine. Walking in the street or driving my car or riding my bike. After that "eureka" moment, I jump into the studio to catch the melody or the harmony of the idea. I use my piano or guitar and record it into my DAW. Then I start building up from there. Add some more music or create a drum pattern over. If its cool, fine. If it sucks, its also fine. I dont throw anything away
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I have a pretty simple and compact studio, but at the same time good enough to achieve my goals in terms of creativity, tools, space and perks (Logic Pro X, KRK Monitors, Audiotechnica microphones and headphones, Shure microphones, Behringer interfase and mixing control surface. Finally an Alesis Midi controler and a Yamaha stage piano. As far as instruments I love playing my guitar, ukelele and bass, and I have a couple of percussion instruments.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I admire EDM DJs and producers as one of the recent genre I started listening to and producing. Among others, Tiesto, Kygo and Guetta. In the film scoring and sound track composition I have been inspired on Hans Zimmer.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I love creating music with clients or producing songs or beats that other artists (male or female) can sing on top. I also enjoy doing remixes and instrumental song that may be synched on videos or just for casual listening
