Interview with Mixed By XB
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Digital for flexibility and precision, with an analog mindset. I focus on tone, depth, and emotion first, then use digital tools to work efficiently, stay recallable, and deliver consistent, high-quality results without compromising the sound.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: My promise is to treat every song with the same care and attention as if it were my own—delivering clear communication, fast turnaround, and a polished, release-ready mix that stays true to the artist’s vision.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: What I enjoy most is helping artists hear their music at its full potential. Taking a song from a rough idea to a polished, release-ready record—and knowing it connects with listeners—is the most rewarding part of what I do.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: The most common questions I get are about turnaround time, revisions, and how to prepare files. I let clients know that I deliver a fast first mix, revisions are collaborative and straightforward, and I provide clear guidelines to make sure their files are ready for the best possible result.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: The biggest misconception is that mixing and mastering are just about making things louder or adding plugins. In reality, it’s about enhancing emotion, balance, and translation so the song connects with listeners on any system and feels finished at a professional level.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: I usually ask about the artist’s creative vision, reference tracks, and release goals. I also ask how the song was recorded, the timeline, and any specific preferences for vocals, low end, or overall vibe. These questions help me deliver a mix that fits the artist’s sound and is ready for release.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Look for someone who listens to your vision and communicates clearly, not just someone with good credits. A great mix should enhance your song’s emotion and translate everywhere, so choose a provider who values collaboration, feedback, and quality just as much as technical skill.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: • Laptop with Pro Tools – the core of my workflow • Reliable audio interface – clean conversion and stability • Accurate studio headphones – for detailed mixing anywhere • A solid vocal mic – versatility for vocals and recording • External SSD – sessions, backups, and sample libraries With those five, I could still create, mix, and finish records at a high level—no matter the environment.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I started by working with independent artists and developing my skills through hands-on experience and real-world releases. Over time, my work gained traction, leading to collaborations with larger artists and label-affiliated projects. I’ve been mixing and mastering professionally for several years, with releases totaling 245+ million streams across major platforms.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: My style is clean, modern, and emotionally focused. I prioritize clarity, strong vocal presence, and controlled low end, aiming for mixes that feel polished, impactful, and translate across all systems without losing the artist’s identity.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I’d love to work with Drake because of his constant evolution and focus on emotion, space, and vocal presence. His records rely heavily on subtle details and mood, which aligns perfectly with how I approach mixing—making the vocals feel intimate while keeping the record powerful and timeless.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Always mix with intention, not just plugins. Start by getting the balance and emotion right at low volume before adding processing—if it feels good quietly, it’ll usually translate everywhere.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I primarily work on hip-hop, R&B, pop, indie, reggaeton, and dancehall, with a strong focus on vocal-driven music. I also work across alternative, melodic rap, and crossover genres, tailoring each mix to fit the artist’s sound while keeping it competitive and release-ready.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My strongest skill is translating an artist’s vision into a clean, impactful, release-ready mix. I specialize in making vocals sit perfectly, shaping low end with precision, and delivering records that translate across all systems while staying emotionally true to the song.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring clarity, impact, and emotion to every song. My goal is to enhance the artist’s vision by making vocals feel confident, the low end hit right, and the record translate on every system—while still sounding competitive and true to the original vibe.
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: One project I’m especially proud of is a vocal-driven release that started as a rough home recording and went on to achieve millions of streams across major platforms. My role was handling the mixing and mastering, focusing on vocal clarity, low-end control, and overall translation while staying true to the artist’s original emotion. Seeing the song connect with a wide audience and perform at a high level was rewarding, and it reinforced the importance of attention to detail and collaboration throughout the process.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I’m currently working on a mix of independent and label-affiliated projects across hip-hop, R&B, pop, reggaeton, and dancehall. Most of my focus right now is on vocal-driven records, preparing them for upcoming releases and distribution.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I start by reviewing the artist’s vision and reference tracks, then organize and prep the session for proper gain staging, phase alignment, and clarity. From there, I focus on balance, tone, and impact—making sure the mix translates across all systems. I deliver a fast first mix, followed by a collaborative revision process. Once approved, I provide final, release-ready files for streaming and distribution. Clear communication and consistent quality are priorities on every project.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: My studio is a private, professionally treated home studio designed for high-level mixing and mastering. It’s built around industry-standard monitoring and conversion to ensure accurate translation across all playback systems. I work primarily in Pro Tools, using a curated chain of top-tier analog-modeled and digital plugins from brands like UAD, FabFilter, Waves, Soundtoys, and iZotope, allowing me to deliver clean, competitive, and emotionally impactful mixes. The room is acoustically treated for precise low-end control and stereo imaging, making it ideal for vocal-driven records, hip-hop, R&B, pop, and indie projects. Every session is handled in a focused, distraction-free environment, ensuring attention to detail from start to finish. My setup is optimized for remote sessions, revisions, and fast turnaround, and I regularly work with clients worldwide—ranging from independent artists to label-released projects with 245+ million combined streams.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I’m inspired by mixers and producers who balance technical precision with emotion, like Noah “40” Shebib, Manny Marroquin, MixedByAli, and Leslie Brathwaite. They all have distinct sounds but share a focus on clarity, space, and musicality, which strongly influences how I approach my own work.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: The most common work I do is mixing and mastering vocal-driven records. Clients typically send in sessions or stems, and I focus on vocal clarity, balance, low-end control, and overall polish to deliver a competitive, release-ready sound that translates across all platforms.
