Interview with UKIAH BEATS

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I recently had some tracks I produced land on a show that aired on Netflix! I was super excited because I always wanted a Netflix placement and now I have one :)

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: Currently I am working on an EP for an emcee and tracks for TV. I am also building my catalog.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: I've browsed the talent on the platform and there are a lot of heavy hitters but I'm not sure of an exact person other than myself that I would recommend yet.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Digital because the sound you can achieve is just as good as analog and you can do more creatively.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: My promise is to conduct myself in a process manner at all times, and do my best to produce billboard ready tracks and songs for your project. I take my music career and every project I am involved in very serious.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: I love putting different ideas together and the whole creative process of making tracks and songs.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: How much do you charge? And I have set pricing but it depends on what you need. If you just want beats, then thats a different price than if you want me to produce songs from scratch with you. Also the amount of tracks you need as well as publishing and royalty splits play apart in pricing.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: That it's easy. A lot of mental and emotional strength is needed to stick to it long enough to produce greatness.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: What interested you about working with me? What type of project are you working on (single, ep, album, or music for tv, film, games, and ads) What's the vibe of the project? Do you have a budget for the project and how much have you set aside for production?

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Know what you are looking for (music for tv, ads, games, and film or tracks for a billboard charting project), know how many tracks you need and when they need to be completed, and have a budget in place for the tracks you need to license or have created for you.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: A maxed out MacBook Pro with Logic Pro X, Waves Plugins, Omnisphere, and several hard hitting drum packs installed.

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I've always been involved in music since a kid. I started in church and began producing tracks for independent rappers and singers. I later began writing and releasing my own songs and currently license my tracks to TV, Movies, Games, Ads and work on creating billboard ready tracks for artists.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: My style is a blend between boom bap, 90's hip hop and R&b, and futuristic trap. I have a classic sound but yet still very innovative.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: Kanye West because he's never been afraid to push the limits creatively and sonically. I also love artists like Lecrae, Joyner Lucas, Kendrick Lamar, Big Sean, and J Cole because along with releasing quality music there is also a thought provoking message in their music. And Drake and Lil Baby because they know how to secure the vibe.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Keep it simple and take the time to pick the right sounds.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: I usually work on hip hop cues and tracks for artists.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: I feel my strongest skill is versatility. I am able to cook up an initial idea quickly but have the patience to work on fin tuning each instrument and element of the track until it feels right!

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: I bring creative ideas that are out the box but the experience to know when to add or take away in order to produce the best sound. I'm not afraid to experiment and push the musical limits a bit to create something relevant but different from the norm.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: I like to get the business completely out the way first and then work on developing a sound both the client and listener will enjoy.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: For the past 10 years I have used Logic Pro as my Daw of choice. I use sounds from Omnisphere I have a simple approach to making music. Use dope samples and industry approved plugins / VST's.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: I've always been a fan of Timbaland and Dr Dre's catalog of music. There are so many other names but those two are the ones that really made me want to become a music producer.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: Most of the tracks I produce are Hip Hop inspired.
