Interview with Alison Prestwood
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Tone (!!!), vast experience and musical knowledge, the right bass and gear, a deep pocket, and a good and caring attitude. I'm good with fingers or a pick--either feels like home.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I listen to the song, determine what bass would be best (I have virtually every kind), write a chart, open a session, and away we go.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I use a splitter so one signal is direct and the other uses an amp. My direct signal goes through a pedal board (used as necessary) to an Acme Motown MTP-66 preamp (these are incredible!) through an actual outboard Tube Tech compressor (the big blue one.) My amp signal goes from the bass to any one of a wide variety of amps and speaker cabinets, depending on the sound needed. An outboard Little Labs phase alignment box is used to align the phase. Those signals go through a Universal Audio Apollo interface to Nuendo 13 in my Macbook Pro.
