Endorse Jean PratI did a lot of productions with Jean at his Purple Sheep studio, and everytime the result is amazing ! And now with his new (old) 24 tracks tape recorder the sound is warmer than ever with a wide range dynamic ! Highly recommended !
I can't recommend Jean Prat enough. I recorded my first album at his studio, and the result is simply sublime. I'm a perfectionist and as soon as we started working, I knew I was in good hands. The quality of the takes and the mix is incredible, and his knowledge of music was priceless every time I needed his input.
It is very pleasant to work with Jean who has a very good knowledge both as engineer and a musician. He is efficient, had great ears and great gears and is able to understand and listen to what you need and want...
Interview with Jean Prat
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I'v been produce record and mixing for 12 years now.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: My main setup is my protools HD rig and my Barefoot MM27 monitors. For tracking, in my studio i have lot outbroad preamp like Aurora Audio, Trident, SSL. I love microphones and the flexibilty the have in a recording a creative process. I'm a big fan of cool plugins, love to record my mixs on tape.. And of course all my instruments... Bosendorfer piano, all my vintage drum kits, all my synths..
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Analog AND digital ! Both are great.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: A lot of pop and rock, and a lot of jazz. But i love many other things !
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Be sur the song have the right arrangements and performance. It's the key of a good mix and a good record. Then, after listening the ruff mix, I start to work, fast and focused on the "purpose" of the mix. When i have the sound i want, i start quickly balance and automations for a most part of the day. I think automation is very very important in my mixing process to get something alive and not boring !
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: A lot ! I'm a big fan of Jon Brion's work ! I love Radiohead, Fionna Apple, a lot of Rock stuff, jazz music.. The list will be too big !
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I do a lot of things ! My first skill is to be a musicien, as a drummer-pianist and composer. So i record drums, produce songs, and of course do a lot of mixing ! And i make analog mastering on tape too, i love the tape sound
