Interview with Chief Beats
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I have one demo complete called "OK Move" (it's on this profile), and I am working on another one called "Count On Me". After these two are done, I am planning on sending them to independent record labels to see if they can help me release them. If not, I will release them myself!
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Digital. I can work when away from home.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: Unlimited revisions. The work isn't done until you are happy!
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Let me know your favourite artists, just like in this interview. We're work partners but we're also friends. All my work is based on customer service, so if you're satisfied, tell someone else. If you're not satisfied, tell me.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I started in 2007 on Fruity Loops, then moved towards making Hip Hop beats on a Roland MC-808. I made beats for local rappers here in Canada. After that I used Reason and then gravitated towards sampling on an MPC1000 connected to a record player. It was here that I started collecting records, and amassed over 500 in a few years! Today, I use Ableton Live 9 because I can still sample and the workflow is much quicker for my clients. This also gives me the ability to work on the road if I have a small keyboard with me.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Kendrick Lamar, because... GOAT!
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: It doesn't matter what kind of training or education you have when it comes to music production. Some of the greats have never set foot in a music class, but they do have hard work ethic and vision. And above all, have fun!
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Hip Hop and Electronic, but I like to push myself towards other genres.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Hard-work ethic.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Communication is key towards building a strong track. So throughout the process, I always let the client know what I am doing, or what I think we should be doing. Also, fast messaging!
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: The client will tell me what kind of style and feel of a song they want. I will then send them some examples of tracks that I have written. If we find one, then I will work on arranging it towards their needs. If we don't, then we will build a track from scratch together.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: Ableton 9 Live with a vast assortment of plugins, KRK Rokit 5 studio monitors, a keyboard and a notebook for songwriting!
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: ODESZA, Jose Gonzales, Deadmau5, Kendrick Lamar, Atmosphere, The xx
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Mainly beat making and editing the arrangement of the song. I also write choruses for my clients if they wish. Once we agree on an arrangement, I will provide all the stems so the client can take it any mixing engineer they wish. All my work comes with unlimited revisions so clients are satisfied with the results!
