Interview with Antonio Escobar

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: One project I'm particularly proud of is my work on "A Place Called World" for the Spanish Edition of John Legend's album Love In The Future. I had the privilege to PRODUCE, RECORD, and MIX this track, which involved multiple versions and a complex production process across three cities: London, New Orleans, and Madrid. A memorable moment during this project was when John Legend was ranked number two worldwide, just behind Katy Perry. Remarkably, the very next week, he reached number one with his hit "All Of Me." Being part of his journey at such a pivotal moment in his career was an unforgettable experience and a highlight of my own professional path.

  3. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  4. A: Why choose when I can have the BEST OF BOTH WORLDS? I incorporate elements from both ANALOG and DIGITAL realms in my creative process. Digital technology offers flexibility and precision in sound manipulation, while analog equipment adds unique warmth and character. This combination allows me to harness the strengths of both to achieve EXCEPTIONAL and TAILORED RESULTS in each project. For me, the choice between analog and digital isn't a dilemma—it's an opportunity to craft a DISTINCTIVE and HIGH-QUALITY SOUND.

  5. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  6. A: My promise to clients is a COMMITMENT TO EXCELLENCE and a partnership built on TRUST, TRANSPARENCY, and DEDICATION. When you choose to work with me, you're choosing a producer who will PRIORITIZE YOUR ARTISTIC VISION and the EMOTIONAL CORE of your music. I bring my EXTENSIVE EXPERIENCE, CREATIVE INSIGHT, and TECHNICAL EXPERTISE to every project. Your music will receive the same level of ATTENTION and CARE, whether you're an EMERGING ARTIST or an ESTABLISHED NAME. I guarantee OPEN COMMUNICATION, COLLABORATION, and a relentless pursuit of EXCEPTIONAL RESULTS. My ultimate goal is to deliver a final product that not only MEETS but EXCEEDS your expectations, CAPTURING THE ESSENCE of your music and leaving a LASTING IMPACT.

  7. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  8. A: What I enjoy most about my job is being part of the CREATIVE JOURNEY of artists and musicians. Collaborating with passionate individuals and helping them bring their MUSICAL VISIONS to life is incredibly rewarding. I thrive on the challenge of understanding each artist's UNIQUE STYLE and translating their EMOTIONS into the music. Watching a project evolve from concept to a fully realized piece is both inspiring and fulfilling. The CONTINUOUS LEARNING and growth in the ever-evolving music industry also keep me engaged and excited about what I do.

  9. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  10. A: Customers frequently ask me the following questions: "What genres of music do you specialize in?" My answer: I have experience working across a WIDE RANGE OF GENRES, including POP, URBAN, ROCK, EDM, ORCHESTRAL, and more. My approach is VERSATILE, ensuring that the ESSENCE OF YOUR MUSIC shines through, regardless of the genre. "Can you provide references or examples of your previous work?" My answer: Absolutely, I'd be happy to share REFERENCES and examples of my PAST PROJECTS. These will give you a better understanding of my PRODUCTION STYLE and the QUALITY OF WORK I deliver. "What is your typical turnaround time?" My answer: Turnaround times vary based on the COMPLEXITY OF THE PROJECT. I prioritize delivering HIGH-QUALITY WORK while meeting MUTUALLY AGREED-UPON DEADLINES. I'm committed to providing UPDATES throughout the process to keep you informed. "How do you approach mixing and mastering?" My answer: I approach MIXING AND MASTERING as a COLLABORATIVE PROCESS. I focus on bringing CLARITY, DEPTH, and BALANCE to each element, while ensuring the overall sound aligns with your VISION. My goal is to ENHANCE YOUR MUSIC'S EMOTIONAL IMPACT and achieve a PROFESSIONAL SOUND. "What sets you apart from other music producers?" My answer: My EXTENSIVE EXPERIENCE, DIVERSE BACKGROUND, and commitment to UNDERSTANDING YOUR ARTISTIC VISION set me apart. I bring a MULTI-PLATINUM and MULTI-GENRE PERSPECTIVE to every project, and my focus is always on making your music shine while preserving its UNIQUE IDENTITY. "Do you offer revisions?" My answer: Yes, I offer REVISIONS to ensure your complete satisfaction. COLLABORATION is key, and I'll work closely with you to make sure the final result ALIGNS PERFECTLY with your vision. Whenever possible, I also offer IN-PERSON REVISIONS to make the experience as close and personal as possible. "What's your process for working remotely with clients?" My answer: I utilize HIGH-QUALITY STREAMING for real-time demos and revisions, and I'm available for VIRTUAL CONSULTATIONS via video calls. EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION is paramount, and I ensure that distance doesn't hinder our ability to COLLABORATE CLOSELY on your project.

  11. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  12. A: One common misconception is that the success of a project SOLELY RELIES ON EXPENSIVE EQUIPMENT. While quality gear can enhance the process, the heart of successful music production lies in the UNDERSTANDING OF MUSIC, CREATIVE DECISION-MAKING, and the ability to bring out the EMOTIONAL ESSENCE of a song. It’s not just about the tools; it’s about the SKILL, EXPERIENCE, and DEDICATION that go into crafting a compelling and resonant musical piece.

  13. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  14. A: When speaking with potential clients, I typically ask: What's the CORE MESSAGE or EMOTION you want the song to convey? Are there any SPECIFIC ARTISTS or SONGS that inspire your project? Do you have any REFERENCES for the sound or production style you're aiming for? Are there particular elements you want to EMPHASIZE IN THE MIX (e.g., vocals, instruments)? Have you faced any CHALLENGES IN PREVIOUS PROJECTS that you'd like to avoid this time? What's the TIMELINE you have in mind for this project? How involved would you like to be in the CREATIVE and DECISION-MAKING PROCESS? Do you have any preferences for how the final product should SOUND (e.g., warm, polished, raw)? Are there any TECHNICAL CONSIDERATIONS or LIMITATIONS we should be aware of? Do you have any ADDITIONAL IDEAS or CONCEPTS you'd like to discuss for this project? These questions help me fully understand the client’s VISION and NEEDS, allowing me to tailor my approach to their specific project.

  15. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  16. A: When choosing a provider, focus on CHEMISTRY and TRUST. It's important to find someone who not only has the technical skills but also connects with your artistic vision. Look at their past work to see if it resonates with the style you're aiming for. Don’t be afraid to ask questions about their approach and how they handle feedback. Ultimately, the best results come from a COLLABORATIVE PARTNERSHIP where both sides feel heard and respected. Remember, it’s not just about the tools they use, but the CREATIVE CONNECTION they can establish with you.

  17. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  18. A: If I were on a desert island and could only take 5 pieces of gear, they would be: My laptop loaded with all my essential software. A reliable pair of headphones. A keyboard controller to create music on the go. A solar-powered refrigerator stocked with food and drinks. And of course, a boat to get back to the studio! 😄

  19. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  20. A: I’m a SELF-TAUGHT MUSIC PROFESSIONAL who began my journey in the industry in the 90s. My first professional role was RECORDING AND MIXING FLAMENCO, a genre deeply connected to my SPANISH HERITAGE. At the same time, I was part of a TRIP-HOP BAND that gained local recognition. Seeking broader opportunities, I moved from the south of Spain to MADRID, where my unique understanding of music quickly opened doors in ADVERTISING, FILM, and collaborations with TOP-TIER BANDS AND ARTISTS. Over the years, I've had the privilege of working in major music hubs like LONDON, MEXICO CITY, NEW YORK, LOS ANGELES, and, of course, MADRID.

  21. Q: How would you describe your style?

  22. A: My sound is DISTINCTLY INTERNATIONAL. It can align with TOP-CHART STANDARDS, or be RAW, DIRTY, and AGGRESSIVE. No matter the approach, there’s always an underlying 'EXPENSIVE' QUALITY to it. I make sure it remains TRANSPARENT enough to let the artist’s PERSONALITY and ESSENCE shine through and prevail.

  23. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  24. A: Bruno Mars is an artist I’d love to work with. His blend of genres, incredible vocals, and dynamic stage presence make him truly inspiring. Collaborating with him would be a dream due to the musical depth he brings to every project. I’m also drawn to working with artists like Billie Eilish, whose innovative approach to pop and dark, emotive storytelling push creative boundaries, and Kendrick Lamar, whose lyricism and ability to weave powerful narratives through hip-hop are unparalleled. However, I'm equally excited to work with any artist—whether established or emerging—who’s eager to PUSH BOUNDARIES and explore new sonic landscapes. What drives me is the journey of turning a vision into a tangible musical piece.

  25. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  26. A: One essential tip I follow is to LISTEN TO THE SONG itself. Instead of imposing my own preferences, I focus on understanding what the song truly needs. This approach keeps the track AUTHENTIC and ensures it resonates with its intended EMOTION and MESSAGE.

  27. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  28. A: My strongest skill is my DEDICATION to every project. I dive deep into each song's details to ensure it reaches its FULL POTENTIAL and captures the artist's vision. Whether you're a NEW ARTIST or JOHN LEGEND, I give the same COMMITMENT and RESPECT to every project, making sure every artist feels VALUED and UNDERSTOOD.

  29. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  30. A: With nearly 30 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE crafting hits and working on films, I bring a deep understanding of the ARTIST'S VISION and specific needs. I offer a KEEN EAR, a wealth of knowledge, and a unique perspective, ensuring that each song not only meets but EXCEEDS EXPECTATIONS.

  31. Q: What's your typical work process?

  32. A: My typical work process starts with an INITIAL CONSULTATION to understand the client's NEEDS and VISION. We discuss REFERENCES to ensure we're aligned on the musical direction. Once we've established a clear path, I create DEMOS and offer REVISIONS based on feedback. Throughout this process, I use HIGH-QUALITY STREAMING and VIDEO CALLS to maintain clear communication and foster a COLLABORATIVE ENVIRONMENT.

  33. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  34. A: I own CAPITAL SOUND, a STUDIO COMPLEX in the heart of MADRID, SPAIN, where I work with my team. My personal room is an ATMOS-BASED SETUP featuring PMC, AMPHION, and NS-10 MONITORS. While I primarily mix IN-THE-BOX (ITB), I also integrate select pieces from my hardware collection, including AVALON, URE, JBL, MANLEY, and SPL gear when needed. CAPITAL SOUND is home to a vast collection of synthesizers, ranging from the 70s to modern day, with highlights like the KORG MS-20, various WALDORF models, and analog ROLANDS. Every inch of CAPITAL SOUND has been acoustically treated with METICULOUS ATTENTION TO DETAIL to ensure the highest sound quality.

  35. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  36. A: In my music production journey, I've been deeply inspired by industry giants. MAX MARTIN is a monumental figure, known for his unparalleled ability to craft CHART-TOPPING HITS across decades. His work has set the gold standard for POP MUSIC PRODUCTION. On the urban side, producers like PHARRELL WILLIAMS and TIMBALAND have revolutionized sound by blending genres and pushing boundaries, continually inspiring me. RICK RUBIN, with his groundbreaking contributions across genres from rock to hip-hop, is another significant influence. Additionally, the meticulous craftsmanship of mix engineers like MANNY MARROQUIN, SERBAN GHENEA, TCHAD BLAKE, and JAYCEN JOSHUA resonates with me. Their ability to bring CLARITY, DEPTH, and CHARACTER to a mix is something I deeply admire and strive for in my own work.

  37. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  38. A: I typically work with two types of clients, both aiming for that EXPENSIVE, TOP-CHART SOUND. The first type trusts me with MIXING and MASTERING to give their tracks a POLISHED, PROFESSIONAL finish that stands out. The second type comes to me to CREATE TRACKS from scratch, perfectly aligned with their vision. Many also turn to me for VOCAL PRODUCTION, COACHING, and VIRTUAL CONSULTATIONS to refine their sound. In every case, my clients are focused on achieving TOP-TIER, RADIO-READY RESULTS

  39. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  40. A: Tony Mateos is a fantastic drummer and a wonderful person. I highly recommend him for his exceptional skills and professionalism.

  41. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  42. A: The spectrum of music I work on is vast, ranging from pop, urban, indie, and rock to orchestral pieces and anything else that piques my interest.
