Interview with Martin Kutnar
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I am working on lot of projects at the same time, rarely I have only one project. But I always respect all projects as they were mine and pay attention to every single one.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I love hearing client's music. You never know when somebody will make your day with such epic and awesome music. Also I love helping people to bring their songs to the next level.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: -
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Be careful who you hire because there are lot of sellers who are self-taught musicians, and cannot compare them with graduate musicians.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: DPA microphone, Laptop, Headphones, RC300 BOSS Loop Station and cello
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: HansZimmer-2Cellos-ish
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Who are open-minded for new ideas, but clearly know what he/she wants from strings in song.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Always respect your clients vision and put it on first place.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Depth, emotions, harmony, powerful staccato chords...
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I listen to song few times and do arrangement in my head. Where should strings be staccato, legato, background harmony, or even solo. After that I move into recording and try to put as many things from my head into reality, starting from bottom line.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I have DPA 4099:core microphone to get crispy and clear sound from my string instruments, as well as to get depth and all emotions from playing.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: Will accept your project as it is mine and do my best until you won't be completely happy with the string arrangement.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: BPM, hz=440?, Where would you like string to be sort of background and where to shine (timeline seconds)?
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I have been playing cello for more than 15 years, my musical production skills have been upgrading since I was 15 years old. I have done already more than 350 string arrangements in the past 3 years.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: POP, orchestral, classical, rock...
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Make an arrangement or play by composed sheet music/midi.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: HANS ZIMMER, Olafur Arnalds, 2cellos etc.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: String arrangement to bring your songs to another level by adding emotions and powerful textures. Either cello quartet, real quartet with violins and viola or even string orchestra.
