Ryan Cruise on SoundBetter

With over a decade in the industry, I’ve mixed, produced, and contributed to records for Grammy-nominated artists including Che Ecru, Ye Ali, and others. My work and time across North America — from Toronto to LA and Miami — shaped how I hear, create, and refine sound. As an artist first, I find beauty in the demo. Less is more. Raw yet refined.

I’ve lived and worked across North America — in Toronto, LA, and Miami — before returning to Melbourne, bringing with me a decade of hands-on experience in every corner of the creative process: writing, producing, recording, and mixing.

Each city taught me something different about sound, silence, and the spaces in between.
Every song gets its own approach — no presets, no shortcuts, just instinct, taste, and precision.

My goal is simple: bring out the emotion in every record while keeping its edge. I balance clarity with character — polish with presence — ensuring each mix feels alive.

Interview with Ryan Cruise

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: One record I’m especially proud of is “BIGGIE.” I recorded and mixed the track — shaping its tone and emotion until it became something unmistakably mine. The beat later resurfaced in major circles, but my version hit different. It stood out because it carried intent — proof that feel and authenticity always rise above hype.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: Finishing up my upcoming project: R1.

  5. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  6. A: Q: How do you get your mixes to sound so clean but still feel alive? A: It’s about restraint and intent. I don’t overprocess — I listen for what makes the record breathe. Every sound should serve the story. The mix should feel cinematic and human at the same time.

  7. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  8. A: People think mixing is science — it’s really storytelling. It’s about knowing when to let silence speak, when to push emotion forward, and when to stay invisible. The misconception is that engineers just balance sound. The truth is, we balance feeling.

  9. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  10. A: I’ve spent over 15 years in the creative industry, moving through design, marketing, and music. I began as a self-taught designer before diving deep into production and mix engineering, working across Toronto, LA, and Melbourne. Along the way, I built and led award-winning campaigns for global brands, then merged everything I’d learned into amercei.studio® — a creative ecosystem bridging music, design, and storytelling. Today, I bring that same cross-disciplinary precision and instinct to every record I touch.

  11. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  12. A: Fili Filizola - Mastering Engineer.

  13. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  14. A: Both.

  15. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  16. A: I will give you a unique mix with my signature sound on it.

  17. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  18. A: I get to do what I love.

  19. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  20. A: • What’s the story or emotion behind your project? • What references or influences do you have in mind for the sound? • What’s your ultimate goal for this song or project?

  21. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  22. A: Look for someone who values your vision as much as you do. Great providers don’t just execute; they bring ideas, insight, and collaboration to the table.

  23. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  24. A: Soyuz 017, Symphony I/O MK2, Chandler Redd47, Genelec 8341 & Stam Audio SA-4000MK3

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: Raw yet polished.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: Drake, Ye, 070 Shake, Partynextdoor, Jessie Reyez.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Less is more.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: I specialize in contemporary R&B, alternative, and genres that push creative boundaries. However, I’m versatile and enjoy working on any project with an authentic story or sound.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: Assisting the artist in making tasteful creative decisions.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: I bring a fresh perspective, blending contemporary R&B, alternative, trap, and hip-hop influences with a polished, dynamic sound. My approach emphasizes emotional depth, unique textures, and a modern sonic identity — shaping records that feel both current and timeless.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: I start by understanding the artist’s vision — the emotion, story, and intent behind the project. From there, I move into pre-production, focusing on arrangement, tone, and sound design to establish the core identity of the record. Once the foundation is solid, I refine each element during the mix, making sure every sound serves the song. Clear communication and collaboration stay at the heart of the process from start to finish.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: My studio blends analog warmth with digital precision — a true hybrid environment built for versatility and creative freedom. It features end-game hardware, including premium preamps, compressors, and EQs, paired with one of the finest audio interfaces available. The digital side is powered by a professional DAW loaded with industry-standard plugins. Every piece is hand-selected to serve both production and mix engineering, delivering a polished, modern sound that translates everywhere.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: Ye, Drake, Partynextdoor, xxxtentacion, Trippie Redd, 070 Shake, 21 Savage, John Mayer, Lenny Kravitz, Jaycen Joshua, Manny Maroquinn, Mike Dean, Tom Elmhirst, Bainz Tay Keith - To name a few...

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: Mixing + Production.
