Interview with Juan Manuel Jácome

  1. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  2. A: Producing, recording and playing new music live.

  3. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  4. A: As long as your front end is solid (microphones, preamps), what you can do in the digital realm has no limits.

  5. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  6. A: I'll be done when you're happy with the outcome.

  7. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  8. A: Ask for examples of the work we've done.

  9. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  10. A: A decent microphone, an RME interface, a laptop loaded with Cubase, headphones and a guitar.

  11. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  12. A: Started with my brothers in our current band, TercerMundo, when I was 11, 34 years ago. We would write songs and rehearse them to death, for hours on end every day. When my oldest brother started working on a commercial studio, we would get access to it on weekends and nights, so we'd literally move in for the weekend and spend endless nights just recording and experimenting. Our first few songs were recorded and mixed on analog tape and boards, to be released on vinyl and cassettes. Then moved to digital ADAT tape, and finally to computers, so I've seen the evolution of the recording scene.

  13. Q: How would you describe your style?

  14. A: I strive for a tight yet exciting sound, always tryting to find the right balance for each song.

  15. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  16. A: Tune your strings before every take!

  17. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  18. A: Rock, from very soft to very hard.

  19. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  20. A: Flexibility and problem solving. There is no process set in stone, and I'm always willing to experiment.

  21. Q: What's your typical work process?

  22. A: I usually begin with placing all the files in order by instrument group, then check for clicks, pops or distortion in every file, and proceeed to fix and clean top and bottom end. After that, just let it flow and see where the song takes me.

  23. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  24. A: Nuno Bettencourt, Extreme, Bob St john, Chris Lord Alge

  25. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  26. A: One of the key points is helping translate the artist's vision into music that is true to their nature, doesn't matter if it's a vocal comp, a mixing or mastering job, or a complete production, my work is a means to convey emotion and expression from artist to listener.

  27. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  28. A: Cubase Pro is the heart of my studio. Pair that with clean inputs, low latency, precise monitoring and a few analog bits for color, the sound a song calls for is always within reach.
