I am a R&B and Pop songwriter and demo vocalist/arranger
Hey Guys! I am singer/songwrtier/topliner current living in NYC , originally from Detroit (Motown) Michigan. My vocal styling is similar to Jason Derulo, Lucky Daye, Mario, Tone Stith and Elhae, but I also have the ability to change my delivery and sing in a top40/Pop style.
My current songwriting credits include Jason Derulo, and several newly signed artists at Sony Music distributed labels.
I am proficient in Pro-tools, and I can bring your already written song to life. I can also write a competitive topline from scratch as long as production is provided!

Interview with Marcus Mims (Journal)
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Digital, because of the world we live in today
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: My style is melodic peaks and valleys, with a rapper-like candence
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I would love to work with Usher. He was such a big influence growing up, and he's still very relevant!
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: When recording vocals, don't rely on the tune while cutting. Record with no effects, and get the notes as perfect as possible THEN add the effects
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I usually like the intersection of R&B and Pop.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My strongest skill is my ability to create a memorable, yet unique melody.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I'm usually the "starter" in the songwriting process
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I typically start with melody first, and then build lyrics around the melody!
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I was especially proud of the debut project released during the quarantine by my artist Con Killion titled Red Flags. I was the main writer and executive producer. It was my first time having that responsibility, and the reception was amazing!
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I'm currently working on newly signed artists and an artist signed to my label Con Killion.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Yes, there are 2 producers I would recommend
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: My promise is that I will do my best to provide a service that will meet there needs in a timely fashion! If we need tweaks, I will send them right away!
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I love the fact that I get to create music for a living!
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: I don't have many questions at this time
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: The biggest misconception is mainly about writing. Some people treat work for hires in a way that doesn't allow for residual income afterwards. If this song becomes a big hit, I would have nothing to show for it .
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: I ask them questions regarding style. Style of the product is so so important.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: I would tell them to ask the right questions to make sure we on the same page with whatever you are looking for!
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Apollo Twin, Neumann Mic, Macbook, Midi Controller, and my Sennheiser HD headphones.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I started out as a vocal music education major in college, and I always knew I wanted to be in the studio. I have been in this industry professionally for about 11 years!
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I have a UAD Apollo and a Neumann TLM 103 mic. My room is fully treated, so I record open room.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I am inspired by James Fauntleroy and Babyface for songwriting and Lashawn Daniels and Kuk Hurrell for Vocal production.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I primarily work as a songwriter/Toplinner for new and established artists. I also demo songs for other writers, and arrange vocals and vocal produce artists in the studio.
