Interview with Jim Mparlas
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I was a producer and engineer on a hip hop album that the recordings took 2 years, another 1 year for mixing mastering and finalising the tracks. We did a lot of work but it was one of the best experiences
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I work on 2 albums and many projects I do my own
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Vincent hands down
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Both. The final product is what matters, there are many things analog has that digital don’t and vice versa. Analog wins a little bit more cause it adds harmonics you can’t achieve 100% with digital but is very expensive too.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I promise to be honest with your work
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: The feeling I get when I’m done. It’s so therapeutic
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Can you do a discount? No. Can you give this for free? No
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: Well I’m a perfectionist, many people don’t take this the right way
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: Do you have a deadline? What energy you vision the track? What the track means to you?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: If your productions need to be treated with respect, I’ll be happy to give them that
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: 1. Moog grandmother 2. Speakers 3. Microphone 4. Drum kit 5. A looper
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I’ve been doing this since 2011. Before that I was playing guitar and drums on bands. I used to dj on many clubs from then till now and I worked with so many people. Did release some songs on record labels and played in festivals.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Dark atmospheric with strong drums and dirty vibes
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I’d like to work with two artists. One is Lorn cause his productions are touching parts of my soul I can’t explain. And the other one is Novel 729 cause his lyrics are healing me
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Music is spiritual and unique, don’t overthink it and never doubt what you provide
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Hip hop and heavy electronic
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: To understand the idea and execute it as well and fast as I can. Also my love for the craft
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Most people say I bring the “out of the box idea”. Also I hear what it needs to be improved in matter of elements and programming.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Late at night, low lighting, nothing in mind just the spirit, opening my daw and the moog. Depends on the day I will mess around with my synth or with vinyl to cut samples.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I roll with a pc, Ableton push 2, Adam A7V, Moog grandmother, Audio technica turntable, pioneer 250 mk2 mixer
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: My inspiration : Lorn, Noisia, The Alchemist, Slipknot, Culprate, Everyone you know, Novel 729
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I make beats and then I do the production mixing and mastering

I was the mind in this production
