Interview with Mixed by Extendo

  1. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  2. A: I have been working on 1Takejay's album, YG's Album, and R&B artist named Ashlee's new single and my own band Modern Hearts music.

  3. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  4. A: I went to Audio school while running a home studio in San Diego. I then moved to Los Angeles to work with other Producers and work at commercial studios. I have been doing this as a profession for about 7 years.

  5. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  6. A: I mix in the box on the most current version of Pro Tools with various brands of plugins. I monitor on Adams, NS 10's and Yamaha Hs7's with a KRK 8 inch sub, along with smaller monitoring sources to check mix compatibility to other devices.

  7. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  8. A: The first studio engineer session I had when I moved to LA was with an artist named Ayzha Nyree. She recorded her remix to "No Guidance" which I recorded and mixed. Surprisingly It went viral getting over 30 million views and #13 on R&B billboard. it also led to her getting a record deal with Republic Records.

  9. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  10. A: N/A

  11. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  12. A: Digital because it makes things way quicker .

  13. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  14. A: I promise to do everything I can to give you a mix you will love.

  15. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  16. A: Every song being a new experience.

  17. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  18. A: I can only mix Rap and R&B when the reality is I have experience in many genres.

  19. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  20. A: Is there a certain way you want things to sound? (What's the overall vision) Preference of effects, (do you like reverbs and modulations or do you want things dry?)

  21. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  22. A: Look for someone who pays attention to the details you ask for in a mix.

  23. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  24. A: My laptop, Interface and Headphones is all I need.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: My style is a clear upfront sound with ear candy from effects.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: The 1975, they have a dope sound and their production is crazy.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Sidechaining your vocal reverb to the vocal will help create more space while the vocal is going. Then allow the reverb to open up once there is a vocal break.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: Hip-hop and R&B

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: Identifying problems in a mix to improve a song.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: I bring a knowledge of how to make a song more than it already is. I can help make things blend together better and artistically more unique and interesting.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: With a typical mix I start by listening to the song all the way through and listen to the style and vibe of the song along with problems i notice within the mix. I then proceed to edit if need be, then move to mixing.

  39. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  40. A: I am a big fan of Mike Dean's mixing production in hip-hop and Tchad Blake in the genre of alternative and rock. Them making mixes super upfront and a unique use of effects is dope.

  41. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  42. A: I commonly do recording, Editing, Vocal Tuning Mixing, and Post-mixing for clients. Usually Hip-hop, Pop and R&B oriented.
