Interview with Adam Stanton
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: My promise is that I am not happy until they are satisfied. My promise is to put them first and do whatever it takes to achieve the sound they are hoping for. My promise is to work without ego or stubbornness, but with a willingness to make something beautiful and powerful.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I love playing a role in an artist's journey. I love hearing their story and being trusted to see it across the finish line. I love learning new ways to produce, mix, and master. I love pushing boundaries and discovering unique methods. I love that music will always have a place in this world and that I am blessed to contribute to new music every day.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Trust that nearly 20 years of trial and error and a willingness to learn, grow, and evolve has developed me as a top tier, professional mixer in multiple genres.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I was a recording artist first. Originally singing in a 5 member pop vocal group, then as a singer-songwriter in the acoustic pop realm. I began beat-making and learning to produce and record my own music. I eventually began to record and mix for local artists who appreciated my overall sound and quality. I began producing for local artists, and developing many artists from the ground up. I have been recording, producing, mixing, and mastering professionally and full-time since 2007.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: I am primarily influenced by TOP40 pop music. If it's a Top10 song on the Billboard Charts, I have likely listened to and studied the production and mixing styles of those songs. I pay attention to how music evolves. I pay attention to the subtle mixing techniques that bring a song to life on any speaker system.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Trusting your intuition will always be greater than finding the perfect sound. It's the imperfections and blemishes in a production that are often the coolest or most original sounding songs. Don't settle for mediocre, but also don't pursue perfection. Perfection kills the soul of a song.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I mix quite a bit of Hip-Hop/Rap, Pop, and R&B. I also have experience with EDM, singer-songwriter, and various other sub-genres.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring 25 years of experience in music. Originally a songwriter and artist myself, I am able to wear many hats and understand both the artist and mixer/producer responsibilities and tendencies. I love catering to my clients' requests, while trusting my own intuition and experience. I love professionally mixed and mastered, radio ready and competitive music. My inspirations are people in the industry with a similar ambition and overall sound quality I can relate to and strive to achieve.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: For mixing, I ask clients to send their organized wave files/stems, along with their demo mix, references, and general direction for the mix of the song. I typically stay in touch with my client to receive feedback from each mix stage. Most mixes are completed after 1-3 edit stages. For mastering, I simply require the client's final mix, and a few reference for overall loudness they would like. For production, this varies based on the client and song at hand.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I operate a professional, commercial studio with a focus on mixing, mastering, recording, and production. I am able to host artists in-house, or work together from abroad. All of my gear is of a high-end, professional level. I have a minimalistic setup, with a primary focus on sonic accuracy and an enjoyable aesthetic and work environment.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I am inspired by mainstream producers Max Martin, Finneas, and Noah "40" Shebib. I am inspired by mixing engineers Serban Ghenea, Jaysun Joshua, and Josh Gudwin. I am inspired by visionary producers Pharrell Williams, Rick Rubin, and Mike Dean.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I produce, mix, and master a variety of music and genres. I operate in a private commercial studio, and work with artists around the globe.
