Interview with João André
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I produced a song for Miguel Araújo a big artist in Portugal that was played in the 3 competing radio stations. An almost impossible task that i’m very proud to have done.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: mixing an album and an EP. Producing 5 songs for 3 different artists.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: no
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Digital, it’s faster and no compromise at all as of a few years ago. The range of choices i have in digital is immense and would be impossible to have the same in analog at this budget.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: it’s only done when you are happy.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Being immersed in sound.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: if i like the song. The answer is yes, i wouldn’t work in it if i didn’t like it, and i have a very varied taste in music.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That you can make a song be something it is not.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: If they have any references, if they have a rough and what they like about it, when do they need have the job finished.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Listen to my work and see if it fits your taste.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: computer with software, microfone, pre, acoustic guitar, headphones.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I was a successful touring/studio musician in Portugal and made a lot of records in that side of the glass. 10 years ago i changed lanes and got into producing and engineering full time.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Straight to the point and not intrusive.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Lana del Rey, because the mix between acoustic instruments and modern atmospheres is inspiring to me.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Close the pan a bit in the verses and go full stereo in the chorus.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Pop, folk and singer songwriter.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Experience and musicality.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: A smooth and immersive listening experience.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Get my mixing prep done by my assistant and get to mixing fresh and motivated.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: Pretty good control room with nice speakers. I have access to a variety of hardware and a lot of plugins. Namely everything from UAD.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: serban ghenea, Mark Ronson, Rick Rubin .
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
