Hi, I am a Recording Engineer and Mixer with a focus on instrumental and pop music. Looking forward to have a chat with you!

My primary focus is recording and mixing instrumental music, such as Blues, Rock, Country, Metal and everything in between. I also like working on pop music productions as long as a live and analogue feel is the goal. Another passion of mine is cinematic music productions with big percussions and classical instrumentation.

Within the last few years I worked with independent musicians, bands and composers from all round the world, including a grammy awarded producer from Russia and a Top 40 artist from Mexico. I also had the opportunity to work alongside multi platinum engineer/producer Yoad Nevo, where I further developed my engineering and mixing skills in a professional/commercial studio environment. Additionally, I am a supporter of the local music scene and have been working closely with small labels such as Spiritual Records and Crown Jewels Records.

I have been passionate about music ever since I played guitar in a rock band as a teenager. After some years of gigging I decided to take my passion one step further and started studying music production in SAE Vienna in 2009. Later on I worked and studied in Berlin and Edinburgh and ultimately graduated from the School of Audio Engineering in London, holding a degree in Audio Production.

I believe that every project is unique, so please do not hesitate to get in touch. Im looking forward to having a chat with you.

Interview with Martin Merenyi

Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
I have produced a band called The King Lot at the age of 22. I was involved from the early stages of demoing, all the way through recording in the studio and mixing. Even though the band members were all at least ten years older then me, they appreciated my professional input and we made a great album together. Today they are one of the top bands in Scotland are now aiming for number 1 in the Christmas charts with their upcoming cover of "Wings". I find it great that such an early project of mine is still going strong and the band are getting more and more attention.
Analog or digital and why?
Analog all the way for recording. The more outboard gear, the better. I like to lock in sounds at the recording stage. For mixing I am a huge fan of digital, for the flexibility and speed of the workflow. I think most current projects would not be possible without digital equipment. I still like to use analogue summing through one of the consoles I have access to, if the song demands it.
What's your 'promise' to your clients?
I work on my projects until the client is 100% happy. I promise excellent communication and friendly and easy going atmosphere throughout the project. And of course top notch results!
What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
Some people overestimate the power of a mix engineer. Bad performances/productions can not be made into commercial super hits. This misconception can lead to some bitterness.
What questions do you ask prospective clients?
- What are you after, do you have a vision for the song? - Is there a rough mix for the song? - What is your timeline? - What is your budget?
What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
Give as much information as possible when you are looking for a professional and be open to communication. Have a chat with the professionals to find out if you get along and if you share the same vision. Be open for negotiations, the initial offers/proposals can change a lot after a few messages have been exchanged.
If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
SSL 4000E channel strip, Neumann U47, Distressor, Laptop, Interface.
What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
I had my first studio session with my old band at the age of 17. At the age of 19 I decided I wanted to become a music producer and started my studies in Vienna as a sound engineer. Now, eight years later, I feel very privileged to have been involved in projects in Vienna, Berlin, Edinburgh and finally London. I have met great people and musicians from all over the world, including India, Singapore, Thailand, Mexico and the US. A special thank you has to go out to my mentor Yoad Nevo. During my time with him I learned the ins and outs of a commercial studio and commercial level mixing and mastering.
How would you describe your style?
No-nonsense straight forward mixing. The goal is to have a great song, not just a technically correct mix.
Can you share one music production tip?
It's about rhythm and melody. Get them right.
What type of music do you usually work on?
I am very lucky to have worked on a lot of different music styles, ranging from Jazz over Rock to Metal, but also commercial pop and rap/hiphop, as well as cinematic music productions.
What's your strongest skill?
Understanding the feel and vibe of the music I am working on is my strongest skill. I believe that the technical aspects of recording/mixing/producing have to be second nature so you can focus on the music itself, without getting lost in technicalities.
What's your typical work process?
I spend a lot of time preparing the mixes I will be working on so that I don't have to focus on technicalities once I am in 'mix-mode'. This includes editing out every noise or silent regions that are unnecessary, colour coding the different instruments, creating subgroups for instruments/sections that I will be treating as one and generally cleaning up the session so that it is as compact as possible. Then I create midi triggers for kick and snare, just to have the possibility of quickly trying out samples without losing focus if necessary. After studying the rough mix/demo, I might start the mix with the drums or the vocals. Some times I use a 'top to bottom' approach, where I mix instruments as they come in to the song. I mix very quickly and try not to overthink things, relying on my first impressions. My mixes are usually in an almost final shape after just a few hours. At this point I might send it off to the client for a first round of feedback, before going into more detail and start the automation process.
What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
Chris Lord Alge for his immaculate mixing approach and technique - and the results. Michael Brauer for his extremely musical and transparent workflow. Andrew Scheps for his very stripped down methods. Matt Bellamy/Muse for pushing the limits of popular music production while staying true to themselves. Too many more to mention...
Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
Most of my work consists of mixing singles, EPs and albums as well as recording in various studios as a freelancer.
