Mixing and Recording Engineer with a focus on Pop/Rock/Country/Metal/Live music. Fast turnarounds, great communication! Looking forward to have a chat with you!

My primary focus is on recording and mixing music such as Pop, Rock, Country, Metal and everything in between. I have excellent work ethics and I promise great communication and a friendly and easy going atmosphere throughout the project.

Every mix starts with you, the artist, so I’d like to have a chat about your vision for your song, EP or album. Why are you doing this, and what is your goal? Are there any elements in other songs that you like? Once I know what you are after it will be easy and quick for me to deliver a great mix for you.

Within the last few years I worked with independent musicians, bands and composers from all round the world, including a grammy awarded producer and a Top 40 artist. I also had the opportunity to work alongside multi platinum engineer/producer Yoad Nevo where I developed my engineering and mixing skills in a commercial studio environment and learned what is necessary to make your music heard.

No project is too big or too small, so get in touch, and we take it from there. I believe that every project is unique and I am sure we can work out what is best for you. Im looking forward to having a chat!

Interview with Martin Merenyi

What are you working on at the moment?
I am currently working on a long Heavy Metal Contemporary Piano Composition, as well as a few pop and rock songs. I am also super happy to be back on board with The King Lot, mixing their charity christmas single. Video is coming soon!
What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
Some people overestimate the power of a mix engineer. Bad performances/productions can not be made into commercial super hits. Also, many times there is a confusion between mixing and producing. Even though I consider myself a creative mixer, some times I am being asked to do very specific things that should have been taken care of during recording/production.
What's your typical work process?
I spend a lot of time preparing the mixes so that I don't have to focus on technicalities once I am in 'mix-mode'. This includes editing out every noise or silent regions that are unnecessary, colour coding the different instruments, creating subgroups for instruments/sections that I will be treating as one and generally cleaning up the session so that it is as compact as possible. After studying the rough mix/demo and having a chat with the artist I might start the mix with the drums or the vocals. Some times I use a 'top to bottom' approach, where I mix instruments as they come in to the song. This changes with every mix and is mostly dictated by the music itself. I mix very quickly and try not to overthink things, relying on my first impressions. My mixes are usually in an almost final shape after just a few hours. At this point I might send it off to the client for a first round of feedback, before going into more detail and start the automation process. After a few revisions the mixes are usually approved and I send off the mix in what ever format required.
What do you bring to a song?
I believe that I enhance the songs when I mix and bring extra dynamics, punch and character to every project.
Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
Most of my work consists of mixing singles, EPs and albums as well as recording in various studios as a freelancer. Part of my work is to make sure every need is catered for and that the musician is happy with the outcome.
Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
I have produced a band called The King Lot at the age of 22. I was involved from the early stages of demoing, all the way through recording in the studio and mixing. Even though the band members were all at least ten years older then me, they appreciated my professional input and we made a great album together. Today they are one of the top bands in Scotland are now aiming for number 1 in the Christmas charts with their upcoming cover of "Wings". I find it great that such an early project of mine is still going strong and the band are getting more and more attention.
Analog or digital and why?
Both are great and valid. I love analogue during the recording stage and digital while mixing.
What's your 'promise' to your clients?
I work on my projects until the client is 100% happy. I promise excellent communication and friendly and easy going atmosphere throughout the project. And of course top notch results!
What questions do you ask prospective clients?
- What are you after, do you have a vision for the song? - Why are you doing this? - Is there a rough mix for the song? - What other bands/artists would you compare your music to?
What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
Give as much information as possible when you are looking for a professional and be open to communication. Have a chat with the professionals to find out if you get along and if you share the same vision. Be open for negotiations, the initial offers/proposals can change a lot after a few messages have been exchanged.
If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
SSL 4000E channel strip, Neumann U47, Distressor, Laptop, Interface.
What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
I have been passionate about music ever since I started playing guitar as a teenager. After some years of gigging I decided to take my passion one step further and move into Sound Engineering/Production. I studied and worked in some great cities around Europe, such as Vienna, Berlin, Edinburgh until I finally graduated from the School of Audio Engineering in London, holding a degree in Audio Production. After graduating I was given the opportunity to work alongside Yoad Nevo in his London based studio, where I learned the tricks of a commercial mixing and mastering engineer. After some time with him I went freelance and have been working as a freelancer ever since.
How would you describe your style?
I like wide mixes with depth and I believe this can be heard across my work. I like to use processors and tools with a lot of character, which is why I am a fan of analogue gear and analogue emulations which I use in all of my mixes.
Can you share one music production tip?
It's about rhythm and melody. Get them right.
What type of music do you usually work on?
I am very lucky to have worked on a lot of different music styles, ranging from Jazz, Rock to Metal, but also commercial pop and rap/hiphop, as well as cinematic music productions. My primary strength, however, are pop/rock related genres and heavy music such as metal and it's sub genres.
What's your strongest skill?
Good communication and strong work ethics. Understanding the feel and vibe of the music I am working on. I believe that the technical aspects of recording/mixing/producing have to be second nature so you can focus on the music itself, without getting lost in technicalities.
What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
Chris Lord Alge for his immaculate mixing approach and technique - and the results. Michael Brauer for his extremely musical and transparent workflow. Andrew Scheps for his very stripped down methods. Matt Bellamy/Muse for pushing the limits of popular and rock music production while staying true to themselves. Too many more to mention...
