Interview with COREY CHORUS

  1. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  2. A: Who do you want to be? What inspires you when you’re living life? With having me apart of your creative process, what do you hope to get out of our collaboration?

  3. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  4. A: I love meeting new creatives, collaborating and turning ideas into tunes that allow us to walk down our driveways to the mailbox and collect royalty checks.

  5. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  6. A: I’m proud of everything I’ve worked on. Tomorrow is never promised. I’m just grateful a ton of tomorrows came and I was blessed to make music.

  7. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  8. A: Working on developing a few acts with a partner, writing new tunes for clients, and expanding on my role as a music executive.

  9. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  10. A: A guy named Corey Chorus.

  11. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  12. A: Both. Great analog gear into a great AD/DA converter allows you to be proud of a record while holding both worlds in a BIG group hug!

  13. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  14. A: I promise to make you sound expensive without breaking the bank.

  15. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  16. A: Can you get my song to this artist/that artist? I don’t sell music business access. Can you make me sound like Beyoncé? I can make you sound like the best you....with a ton of sparkle!

  17. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  18. A: The biggest misconception about what I do is; Corey can take this song and make a big artist or star record it. I DO NOT sell access into the music business. I sell turning your musical ideas into tangible form. I will say this though, “A great song will find a great home when the home.”

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: When hiring an artist like myself, it’s important to have an idea of what you would like your end product to sound like. Have references and other examples you can share to help the creative process. There’s NO PRESSURE when creating music from your soul. I will always protect and nurture our creative process.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: Neumann U87 Neve 1073 CL1b tube tech My computer Apollo Twin

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I was once an artist. I’ve toured with some amazing artists and realized, I love the behind the scenes aspect of the machine that support and maintain these artists. It’s been 15 years of blood, sweat, and many tears. The journey has been rewarding and I often reflect on the times I only dreamt of being in the position I am now.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: I’m a maitre’d at my core. I love to make sure my clients are comfortable and enjoy the product we’re working on. It’s important to ‘serve the music’...and I find pleasure in doing so everyday.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: I’d like to work with Billie Eilish. I enjoy the way she controls her mixed voice. Her falsetto is like silk but her mixed voice is second to none in the pop vocal game.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: It’s important to use silence the best you can. Silence is an instrument you must wisely.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: I usually work on Pop, R&B, and Gospel tunes.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: Topline writing is my favorite BUT I live, breathe, and sleep vocal production.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: I believe it’s important and my sole responsibility, no matter the budget, to make each song I work on...SOUND EXPENSIVE!!!

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: When creating by myself, I love to start with creating a track or a loop of some sort. With just that, I can begin to form melodies and lyrics, structuring the song. From that point, I continue adding to the top line and production until I reach a point I feel the song will be enough for the listener.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: I work mainly with a high end vocal chain (Neve 1073, CL1B, Sony C800) into Protools. When allotted, I head into my favorite room with Augspurger monitors to feel the bottom end I believe you must get right.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: I’m inspired by a host of musicians...from Jazz (Chick Correa) to Gypsy Kings, to Quincy Jones, to Timbaland, Pharrell Williams, to Max Martin and Stargate.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: I often provide lyric/melody writing, vocal production, and engineering for most of my Indy and Major label clients.
