Incredible talent and very fast worker, took my song ideas, beat, and sketches and wrote beautiful topline melodies. Was very impressed by her lyricism and tone.
Maisie is amazing!! I recently had her do some harmonies and additional production on a track of mine. She went above and beyond and was super communicative through the entire experience. Definitely elevated the track.
Interview with Maisie May
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I work at two different locations in Brooklyn, NY. I have a home-studio set up at my apartment in Williamsburg, and I also share a studio space in Bushwick. It is a shipping container that has been converted into a really cool artist space! I have my gear split between both places.
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I am proud of the 4 singles I released in 2020. It was a hectic year on all fronts, but I didn't let it stop my creative flow. I wrote, sang, and produced on all 4 tracks and I couldn't be prouder of the progress I made throughout the year. I can't wait to learn/grow more through the music I make in the future.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I am currently working on releasing my first EP under my artist name, Maisie May! It's going to be called "Face it," and it should be done by early 2021.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Brandon Tong is an incredible producer and mixer. We frequently collaborate on projects and I would recommend him to anyone who wants help with production/recording/mixing!
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Both! Analog for the uniquity and digital for the ubiquity : )
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I promise that I will do everything I can to fulfill your wishes, answer your questions and most importantly I will exert my passion into every job I do for you!
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I love using my talents to create unique/glistening soundscapes. Nothing lights my fire more that making something that I genuinely enjoy listening to!
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What inspired their project? What artists are they hoping to sound like?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Don't be afraid to ask questions and give me critiques! I want all of my clients to be happy <3
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: Music has excited me in so many different ways throughout my life, and I always knew it was something I wanted to pursue. I have been singing and performing since I can remember, and when I downloaded Logic Pro X when I was 15 my enthusiasm for music grew exponentially. I dropped out of highschool to focus on music and went to the New School for Contemporary Music 2 years later. It was 2018 when I first started to shape my own sound as a producer and songwriter. This boost of inspiration is what led me to releasing music under my current artist name, Maisie May.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Caroline Polachek! Her career path and current project is so inspiring. I think she's really doing something special with her first solo album, "Pang."
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Don't be afraid to change up your order of doing things! (ex. try recording/programming drums last if you normally do them first) Sometimes that is how I make the most exciting/unique music :)
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I usually work on indie dream-pop/synth-pop music, but I look forward to exploring other genres! I think that the soft indie voice that I use on my personal tracks could blend really well with other genres like rap/techno as well.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Making memorable top lines, and harmonies to accompany them.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: If I am singing, I will bring glossy vocals accompanied by beautiful harmonies. If I am producing, I will bring a bubbly and dreamy soundscape to the track.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: When I am working on a personal project, I am usually doing all musical aspects at a time: my writing inspires my production, which inspires my vocal performance of each track. It's really fun to let all three aspects of songwriting feed off of each other. If I am only working on one aspect of someone's track, (i.e. vocal recording) I like to treat it more as a professional studio session. I spend time warming up my vocals, keep hot tea by my side and take my time with each recording.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Caroline Polachek, Soccer Mommy, Ok Lou, Clairo, Okay Kaya and mannnny more incredible women<3
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
