Interview with Nick Rannikko
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Amy Grace is a superb vocalist and artist. Working with her was a dream and could not have turned out any better. Highly recommend for any project you have!
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: What is your turn around time? Usually, depending on the track, the turn around time can take anywhere from 3-7 days. What If I don't like the mix? I offer free revisions and would like to communicate more to solve an issue.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I would like to work with any artist available! Everyone has their own unique process and sound that is truly inspiring to me. And every person has a different lesson to teach!
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I wouldn't say any specific artist or producer inspires me. What inspires me is other independent artists in the world. The drive, motivation, and pure blood, sweat, and tears that are put into a track gives me real inspiration to do what I do!
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: One project that I will never forget is the Rock-Reggae EP 'Haze' I produced, mixed, and mastered for the band Twenty-Somethin. It was a different project for me and I had the best time working on it. The mix sounded fantastic overall but my favorite track had to be 'Count Your Blessings'. The groovy rhythm and bassline had me moving every time I listened to it. Getting the mix to sound crystal clear was challenging but very rewarding.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Currently I'm working on personal projects for an upcoming album. And It has never sounded better! I'm also helping a couple of friends with their mixing and mastering; giving some tips and tricks to nail the mix in question.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: The true sound of analog will never be beaten with its warmth and authenticity but digital is very easy and simple to work with. Most digital VST plugins and instruments come very close to the analog sound in question so I prefer to use digital. But if analog is available I won't hesitate to work with that
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: My promise is to give the client a trustworthy and friendly experience. Communication is key to achieving a great mix so I encourage the client to speak up about what they desire, what they want fixed, and what vibe they're trying to achieve. Along with the promise of a great user experience and a healthy, full sounding mix
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Mixing and making the client satisfied! I've been mixing/producing for 9+ years but the main part about what I love is making a mix sound incredible to the ears, balanced perfectly, and sounding full. Mixing is quite a difficult task but I find joy in the challenge
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: People, most of the time, tend to think mixing is producing. While I do also produce, Mixing is the art of balancing and tweaking all of the frequencies and sounds in the mix to sit perfectly with minimal distortion and maximum comfortability to the human ear.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What's the overall vibe you're trying to achieve? What do you think needs improvement in the mix? What needs to be removed? Is there anything that doesn't sit right with you for the mix in question? Are there any specific reference tracks you want the mix to sound like? What element do you want to stand out the most in the mix?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Be upfront and don't hesitate to share your idea for the track. To get a clear idea of a perfect mix, you need to be straight forward and give as much detail as possible.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: I would take my 2 Kali Audio LP6's, Mashcine Mikro, my USB drive with $5000 worth of vst plugins on it, and my computer so I can keep working on the BEST mixes
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I have been training myself in the art of mixing and producing for around 9+ years. Looking up videos, experimenting, tweaking etc. I then decided to take my talents to the Berklee College Of Music for audio engineering. And so far, It's been working out fantastically! I couldn't imagine a life without my love for audio engineering.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: My style is mostly pop, rap, and indie. But I truly don't have a limit for what I can mix. Usually I have a good idea of what needs to be achieved regardless of genre or style. It really depends on what the client asks for and what they need with suggestions from myself here and there.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: KEEP. PRODUCING! The only way to get better is to keep making and finishing new projects. Try to finish as many projects you can. Put yourself in different situations and try different sounds or genres. Experimenting will help you achieve your own unique sound and help get you noticed.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I work on all sorts of genres but mainly pop, rap, and indie tracks. I can mix almost everything and It always results in a beautiful sounding mix.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My strongest skill is communicating, and making everything sound balanced and crystal clear. Most of the time my mixes don't even need mastering because of how good they sound!
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I can bring character, fullness, comfortability, and depth. Most mixes don't have a wide stereo field or something that really brings the song out to its full potential. I can guarantee your song will sound like YOU after I'm done with it!
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Usually I'll listen to the clients mix and make notes about what is too loud or too soft, what frequencies need to be leveled out, and what I think needs to be achieved to have a near perfect mix. I then have a conversation with the client asking questions like "What's the overall vibe you're trying to achieve?" "What do you think needs improvement in the mix?" "What needs to be removed?" "Is there anything that doesn't sit right with you for the mix in question?" Afterwards, I try to get about 2-3 reference tracks from the client to get an idea of the sound they want. I then listen to the tracks and get to work. If there's something that needs retouching in the production process, I'll make that clear and tell the client. My turnaround time for mixes can vary depending on the track and the goal in question, but usually it's 3-4 days.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I have 2 Kali Audio LP 6 studio monitors, Focusrite 2i4 audio interface, Beyerdynamic DT-990 Pro's, Shure SM7B, multiple Waves, Slate, Native Instruments, iZotope, and SoundToys plugins for mixing & mastering, and FL Studio 20 for mixing and mastering.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: The most common work I do is mixing and mastering. I do production on the side here and there but my main skill is mixing a track to sound wide, full, and as comfortable to the human ear as possible.
