Interview with Jai Hallen

Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: - I mix with Yamaha HS8s - UAD interface and plugins powered on an I-mac workstation - I use Ableton Live as my main DAW for productions - Antares Auto Tune , UAD plugins, slate digital, sound toys etc - I have waves plugins, all slate digital plugins, sound toys plugins and izotope plugins I use. - Multiple synth plugins and Keyboards - Drum pads - I have multiple guitars Fender Strat, Martin Acoustic Guitars, Gibson guitars.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I am currently working on multiple projects (Mixing, songwriting, and Production)
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Pop and Hip Hop are the most frequent genres of work I receive.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: I would describe my music production style as pop blended with hip hop drums.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Digital for me, I love all the new plugins that are out with new technology and I grew up on all the digital production and mixing tools.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I will always put my all into the mix and treat the track like it was my very own. I am very easy going and work well with others as a team. I will work until the client loves the outcome.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I love connecting with artists and taking there mix from an idea to a beautiful presentable piece of music.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: - Are you open to me Creative mixing this track or do you have a specific vision or reference to go with? - Have you ever had someone else mix your vocals before? - I always ask and recommend them sending multiple vocal stems for layering when a client only sends a couple stems.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: My one music production tip would be make sure to use layers. Layer your guitars, instruments and drums and use panning to get width in the mixing stereo field.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring creativity in the mixing process. I take a lot of pride in my creative mixing ability by mixing deep layers and ambience layers to bring a vocal mix to life and give it a unique twist.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: When producing music, my work process starts most of the time with the guitar. I play around with chords or a riff and try to build from there adding drums and ambient layers deep in the mix to give depth.

A: I am inspired by acoustic guitar Nashville style country guitar sounds.
