Other times I work with them much earlier, helping them build up songs and arrangements - from drums to guitars and strings.

Chris is a producer who thinks like a songwriter (most likely because he IS an excellent songwriter in his own right). Whether he's mixing or producing, his first port of call is what does the song need, what is the artist trying to get across - and then he applies all of his technical and musical skill to facilitate that. The result is music that is ultra professional but alive. And the last bit is so rare these days.
