Cameron McMichael on SoundBetter

Mixing and Recording engineer, Grammy nomination.

Hey there!

I am a mixing and recording engineer with experience in music studios in the U.S, Germany, and Brazil. I've worked in theater, film, as FOH, on music TV shows, museum installations, and last year as a recording engineer for a Grammy-nominated album. As an audio engineer with 10 years of experience, I can add warmth, depth, and a sense of movement and definition to your music. I can give your music that final 'spark’ that it wants!

How I work: first, send me a demo and some references and we'll have a detailed conversation about the emotion behind your music, and what your vision is. Then, I get to work! And as I work through the mix I'll keep you updated about how it's going: turnaround time is between 1 to 3 days, depending on the project. I offer 3 revisions free of charge. After that, it's 50 per revision. As for mastering: I leave mixes room to breathe - but still competitively loud.

If it's your first time working with me your first mix is absolutely free. I offer this because I know that making music is a very intimate affair, that your work is precious, and that it’s important to build rapport and trust with your engineer.

In the end, my goal is that I want you to love listening to your track over and over again!

Come on, press the contact button and let's start talking about your project!

Cameron is a highly skilled, patient, and communicative mixing engineer. He added a polish to the rough mix I knew I couldn't achieve on my own.

Cameron is the man. Always prompt and clearly has a vast experience with music production. Cameron brought my track to a new level with his expertise. Look forward to working with him again.

I've been working intermittently with Cameron for 5+ years now (as a mix engineer, also recording a time or two) and it's always a pleasure. What keeps me coming back (more than just the finished sound) is how he really takes the time to dive into your universe before he ever touches a dial - he really wants to get into your head to know where you want the sound and vibe to go, so that he can help you take it there. Highly recommend working with him and will definitely be doing so myself again soon.

Interview with Cameron McMichael

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: One of my career highlights was recording an amazing live session for the Los Angeles string theory which went on to get a Grammy nomination.

  3. Q: How would you describe your style?

  4. A: Invisible, emotional, hyper-real, accurate.

  5. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  6. A: I like to work with anyone who cares a lot about what they are creating. Preferably an artist who doesn't mind having detailed conversations about the aesthetic and intent of the production before I ever begin to mix.

  7. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  8. A: A great performance is more important than anything. If you felt the magic in the studio it's the mixers job to just get the technical aspects out of the way and let the emotion shine.

  9. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  10. A: I like to work on whatever music has emotion in it. Music that takes a risk. Genre is irrelevant.

  11. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  12. A: Switching back and forth between listening like a technician and a fan.

  13. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  14. A: Pro Tools 12 HD, Logic Pro X, Ableton live 10, UAD Plugins. I work on an Apollo system with Focal speakers and DT880's. I have mobile access to top studios for referencing.

  15. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  16. A: Some of my favorite engineers are Roy Halee (Paul Simon, Graceland) Mike Shipley, (Allison Krauss- Paper Airplane) Bruce Swedien (Thriller- Michael Jackson) and Del Palmer (All his work with Kate Bush). Oh yea- and whatever amazing magic is happening on most Devo tracks.

  17. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  18. A: I mix music, or am hired for studio recording sessions. I love film audio and do post production work- editing and mixing.
