Interview with Evan Whitford

Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: Pretty standard SM57 mic into a Focusrite Scarlett 18i8. Monitoring from an Audio Technica headphones.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Some of my favorite musicians are Freddie Mercury and Brian May (Queen), David Bowie, Gerard Way and Ray Toro (My Chemical Romance), Mike Patton (Faith No More/Mr. Bungle), Tim Smith (Cardiacs), and Les Claypool (Primus). Some of my favorite producers are Rob Cavallo, Butch Vig, and Ross Robinson.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I'm writing an album for my project "Suspended In Cobwebs" while independently booking and managing the project.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Ben Schrier is always great to work with!
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Analog, but Hybrids are pretty awesome!
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: It's really good for people that have opinions on everything, like myself.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: Do you have stems ready to send me?
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I'm enrolling in college as a Performer-Composer Major this Fall! I've sang and played guitar since I was 13, and I have been producing for about 4 years.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: I once sent one of my college guidance counselor's a song I recently did, and he said he recognized the "Whitford wall of sound". So I oughta coin the term. I think there's a lot going on everything I do musically.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Learn about gain staging as soon as possible!
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Punk, Rock, Metal, and Alternative.
