Conservatory-trained, improvising, creative, thoughtful, and synesthetic percussionist has experience in genres from Cuban folkloric music to traditional Irish, from flamenco to Mahler, from Donnie Hathaway to Chris Stapleton. With a fresh and versatile perspective, Julian is a dedicated collaborator who brings his full artistry to every project.
Called a “one of the Boston music scene's most valuable players” by The Art Fuse, Julian Loida is a percussionist, composer, and producer. Loida’s musical curiosity and open-mindedness has propelled him towards a wide-range of sounds, genres, and artistic endeavors. He’s performed jazz, folk, and classical, collaborating with dancers, visual artists, songwriters/composers, and musicians of all stripes. The thirst to participate in and experience this range of sounds is partly a product of Loida’s synesthesia. Music is a full- body experience for him, with sounds often invoking involuntary sensations of color, texture, or even taste.
Loida has toured internationally as a featured artist at Korrö, Sweden’s largest folk music festival, and played some of the most prestigious music festivals in the U.S. such as Spoleto, New World Festival, the Exit Zero jazz festival, Caramoor American Roots Festival, and Round Top Music Festival. He has performed with groups such as Alarm Will Sound, the Callithumpian Consort, and the Chautauqua Symphony Orchestra.

I worked with Julian on my most recent album, and I was so impressed. He came into the studio remarkably well-prepared, with notes and ideas for his percussion part on each track, and was such a pleasure to work with. Communicative, organized, and wonderfully creative, Julian is such an asset to any project he’s a part of. Highly recommended!
I've enjoyed working with Julian in rehearsals, in the studio and on stage. He's flexible, talented, professional, and fun to be around. He's a creative percussionist and a clear communicator. AND, a great podcast host too!
Julian is a rare combination of excellent skill and total likeability! He's never phased by a new musical challenge and he is always such a joy to work with.
He recorded some vibraphone with me this year and his accurate and emotional playing brought a whole new level of vibrance to the song. I can't wait to write another song with vibes or marimba just so I can collab with Julian again!
Julian Loida is a joy to work with-- a very sensitive and brilliant musician whose ears are open to all possibilities and all genres of music. I hope to collaborate more with him in the near future. I recommend him without hesitation! 5+ stars!
Julian is not only an extremely solid, creative, and versatile percussionist, but also one of the kindest, most organized and timely musicians I’ve ever had the pleasure of working with. His additions to our string cover of a pop song we’re so on point and he whipped them up so quickly! Highly recommend!
