Interview with Jon-John Robinson
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: TLC/CrazySexyCool because its one of the biggest albums by a female group. I wrote and produced a song with Babyface.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Finishing an album.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Analog because it sounds better, but most artist can't afford it because it's expensive. So I brought the proper plugins that can deliver that analog sound.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I deliver great work.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: There always something new to deal with everyday. It's never boring
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Will this be a hit? My answer always is depends on how you market and invest in yourself as an artist. Investment is not only money but time and effort
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: The biggest misconception is that I can make you a star. Producer can only create great music they don't make stars.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What is their true intention for their music. What are they looking to get out this.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Work with who makes you feel comfortable and can actually deliver. Don't be afraid to ask questions.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: My iPad, A keyboard, Atom SQ a Mic and a 8TB hardrive.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I've never known any other real job than that of Songwriter and Music Producer. I've been blessed and fortunate. I've done nothing but Music my entire adult life.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: I don't think I have a real style, but if I were to use a word I use the word texture.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I've worked with everyone I've wanted and I've met everyone who's inspired me.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Always pay attention to what's going on musically and trust your instincts
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I don't have a specific type I can do anything but I usually will lean toward R&B because of the changes that occur in that genre
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My strongest skillset is that of a Producer
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: The complete process
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I don't really have a typical process I let the situation grow organically.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I have room that's built for creativity, I use mostly Presonus gear. I have a Native Instruments Maschine, StudioLive24 III Console. I use Logic Pro X and Studio One V 5 as Daws.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I'm really inspired by Prince as a Songwriter, Producer and Artist. I love the complexities of his work. Other Producer are Face, Timbaland, Pharrell, Dre and none other than the G.O.A.T. Quincy Jones.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: The most common work I do is Artist Development, Songwriting, Production and Mixing Projects.
