Interview with Emiel Monte
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I will always respect your vision. Even in the case where it may differ from mine. I will communicate my thoughts but prioritize finding common ground, rather than pushing through my input. Music is subjective, there is no single perfect way. I will work until we find that sweet spot, no questions asked.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Connecting and leveling with creative and passionate people. Combining perspectives and visions, working towards a shared end goal is honestly the best part of the job.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: The easy answer is friends and family forever calling me a DJ. But on a serious level it is the psychological aspect of working in music. So much is done on intuition and emotional connection. Channeling this is honestly a skill on its own which can distinguish who is made for this and who is not.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Find someone that respects your vision and can relate to your ideas. Who you expect to provide the right balance between improving the track while retaining the vision. And quite importantly, someone who you feel comfortable communicating with.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: • Guitar • Macbook • Headphones • Interface • Mic
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: From a young age I started playing guitar, but branched out other instruments soon after. In my early teens I discovered music production which is where it all came together. With that I found my true passion. I've had several artist projects, with two being signed (Montis, Small Talk). From there I discovered the world of publishing, sessions and writing camps. I've had the privilege of traveling the world, producing and writing for renowned artists, starting in my late teens. I got a degree as a music producer at the Herman Brood Academy and have been working music full time since. I've never stopped learning and growing as an all-round musician and will always be eager for self development.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: This is different for each track, but I'd say my signature often is combining several elements, melodies and harmonies in a elegant and coherent way. This can be super clean and minimal, but also full and expressive.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: For my very first concert I went to Coldplay with my parents and sister. This honestly blew me away and shed the light on music for me that has never gone away since. So I have to go for them as the top entry on the list!
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Most of my projects can be defined as pop. But I also have a strong connection with the more experimental/indie side and even dip my toes in other genres from time to time.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Providing a human approach in a developing industry where that is slowly becoming a rarity. I see music as being related to emotion, which is a human trait. Often it tells stories, some intimate and personal. No matter the circumstance, people that trust me with their music are treated with respect and proper attention.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Making sure to level with whoever I'm working with. This starts with the communication style, preferred workflow and how to get towards the goal. This is different with each person, but often naturally develops as we go. The results follow.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I've learned so much from many people I've had the pleasure of worked with, no matter the level. Everyone has something that inspires me or shed new light on the way to approach music.
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I attended a writing camp in Denmark where I got to work with so many insanely talented and renowned writers for a whole week. Barely slept, but I cherish the memories. Honestly the best thing I've experienced in my music career so far.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I'm working on several exciting projects, but I'd say one of the most important things I'm working on is being the best father and partner I can be.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Luke Alvin & Fred Miller
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Q: What's your (lowest) price? A: It depends on that specific project. For every budget there's a maximum of time, effort, priority etc. I can invest. The price I reflect will always be fair in relation to the effort I put into it.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: Depends on the requested services, but anything to make sure it's a match and things line up for a successful collaboration.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: A deep level of understanding how to get the best out of any track. From a technical standpoint and a creative perspective. I work fast, but meticulous. Though I always share my expertise, music is subjective. My unlimited revision approach is build on this, as I believe that will give the best opportunity to combine visions and get to the best result everyone is happy with.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Getting the most out of each collaboration creatively and communicatively. Most of my projects consist of music production and mixing, though I branche out to other aspects as well.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: For gear, I'd say analog for character, digital for control. If AI is considered digital here, then analog all the way ;)
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I've got an acoustically treated studio, build to provide a space for what I do best; produce, record, edit and mix. What I use on the daily: Logic Pro, Universal Audio, Melodyne, Spectrasonics, Kontakt, Serum, Auto-Tune, Soothe, Bloom, FabFilter, Soundtoys, Izotope RX, Gullfoss, Lauten Audio, Focal, Neumann, Fender, Taylor
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Don't be afraid to try things you don't know. Always stay adventurous and expand the possibilities. Trust your ears first, analyze after.
