Hi! I’m Max - a drummer, producer and mixing engineer based in Austria. I’ve been playing drums since I was 6 years old and in 2023 I founded a recording studio called artig recordings.
My musical endeavors have brought me around the block quite a bit - as part of the band Kitty in a Casket I’ve toured the UK and US and recorded an album in the famed Studio Wong (Berlin) produced by Daniel Flamm.
Within Austria, I achieved radio airplay on radio stations with several projects that I’ve been associated with over the years: TAN ME, ELSA, Greyshadow just to name a few.
I also worked as a musical director and composer for theatre productions.
My musical comfort zone spans from soulful Singer-Songwriter music to hard-hitting rock anthems.

Max is great to work with. Super clear about what he's looking for but also open to additional input. A really nice working relationship!
Interview with Max Zauner
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: With Greyshadow, I feel like we crafted a unique sound. It's been a journey and I'm glad to be part of the ride.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Thomas Juth is a great mixer and has been inspiring to me.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: A mix of both! You can't deny the flexibility and the speed of the workflow in a digital environment. But sometimes it's freeing to actively take a step out of that and just turn some knobs until it sounds good.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Getting to be creatively involved in someone's vision is one of the most rewarding things I have experienced. Music is meant to be made together in a collaborative process, and I'm all there for it.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Since I got my first analog bus compressor, I wouldn't be able to live without one. The workflow might be more tedious, but the results are hard, if not impossible, to recreate digitally.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I love moody singer-songwriter stuff, folk music all the way to Pop/Rock. That's my wheelhouse and where I feel comfortable in.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I've founded my own little recording studio called artig recordings in Lower Austria. I've collected a bunch of outboard gear over the years and have a clean monitoring setup that I love and cherish. It's very functional and quickly setup for recording some bits and pieces with drum machines, synths, guitars and a bass.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: For drums, I'm a big fan of Ash Soan and Nate Smith.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I do some production work but mostly mixing, and I also do drum recordings on a regular basis. Understanding and grasping the sound and general idea of a song is the key to a successful collaboration for me, so try to line out what you're aiming for as accurately as possible.
