Professional work, and great coworker !
As a member of Krypteia, a band Doom Daddy has supported us in and out of the studio. He's helped us grow as a band with his expert knowledge of producing excellent tracks and advice on how we can all improve as musicians. We have recorded 3 tracks with him so far and every one of them has come out better than any of us could have ever expected. His demeanor is perfect for a comfortable yet productive session each and every time we work with him. I would recommend him to anyone who wants to have their mind blown by what their song or album can be.
Derek makes the most crushing and heavy tones I've ever encountered. His mixes hit harder than a semi-truck driven by a yeti who's got a truck full of smithing anvils that are late for delivery. Big tones, creative and vibe abounding. The Doom Daddy is the man to hire for your next track!
My band and I have been working with Derek on our next EP for the past few months, and from first hand experience, his ability to bring out the best in you and your music is second to none. I'm sure that I am going to be a lifelong customer, and you should be too if you want to sound killer.
Interview with Derek "Doom Daddy" Mattin
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: Producer - Hail The Void's debut album "Hail The Void". A "live off the floor" album that Revolver Magazine named Best Debut Album at the Doomies 2021.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Analog for coloring music, and digital for editing / composing.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: This will be the most creative recording experience of your life.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: Great records aren't the result of a great mix. They are the result of great performances on great songs.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: Budget, Timeline, General description of your project.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Listen to the sample tracks and then reach out with a full description of services you are looking for and the results you are expecting.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: Crappy bedroom demos -> Touring guitarist / vocalist -> Session guitarist -> Recording

A: Rock / Metal / Doom / Stoner
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: The ability to hear a song like a first time listener
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: The workflows that sets me apart from the rest are: 1) I put a heavy focus on Pre-Production. Lets make the song the best it can be and find the optimal techniques to record it. 2) If the song / project fits it, I track drums last. This allows the drummer to write to a finished song.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: A modest setup of speakers I trust, a bit of analog gear for color, and all the tools to make the sounds right before I even put up a mic.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Production - Helping artists find their unique soundscapes and sonic delivery. Starting at the song concept level, through the arrangement, tracking, mixing, mastering processes. I'm there to guide the artist from start to finish. Mixing - Radio quality mixes with feel
