Interview with Bea Mar

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: In my latest EP, Homebeats, I set a challenge for myself: to compose, sing, and record all the instruments, arrange the tracks, and even design the covers and videos—all by myself. It was a challenge I wanted to take on, using sounds from my travels as samples in my songs to reflect the journey of sounds that has been my life.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I’m currently working on my second album as an artist and pursuing music full-time both within and outside of SoundBetter.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Yes, I highly recommend Andrés Mayo for mastering. He mastered my entire first album and is an outstanding professional and a very kind person.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: For certain things, I prefer analog (like cameras), but in music, digital opens up an incredible world of possibilities that analog doesn’t offer.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: You will always receive high-quality work from me, and I always put my best effort into everything I do.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: I love meeting amazing artists and working on projects from around the world.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: Clients often ask if I’m open to discussing a featuring, and I’m very open to it if the project aligns with my artistic vision.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: People often think that if a job takes little time to complete, it must be easy, but it actually takes years of practice to make things look effortless when there’s a lot of work behind it.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: I ask about their vision for the project, its intended purpose, and specific references for what they want.

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Listen to my voice and the music I create to see if it aligns with what you’re looking for. I’m also open to exploring new genres and styles I haven’t done before.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: A guitar, cajón, a recorder, my laptop, and probably a fun percussion instrument.

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I started as a singer-songwriter, performing in restaurants, events and weddings. Then I pursued a professional music degree at university. I’ve been a music teacher for 10 years, working as a choir and ensemble director, and I’ve also taught at the university level. I launched my solo project, released two albums, and everything has been growing beautifully. Now I live in Paris, where I continue to grow and work in music.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: I’d describe my style as emotional and heartfelt. I also enjoy having fun and creating more commercial songs with catchy, playful lyrics.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: I’d love to work with artists like C. Tangana, Rosalía, Maro, or Chappell Roan. They have a very authentic vision of their art and are multifaceted artists.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: If a song sounds great with just a guitar or piano accompaniment, it’s a solid song.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: I work a lot in pop and unique projects that blend different styles. I'm open to all genres because I love experimenting and growing as an artist.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: My strongest skills are singing, songwriting, and playing the cajón.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: I bring my extensive experience in singing, songwriting, arranging, choir directing, ensemble work, and percussion. I strive to give my best in every project I undertake.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: I like to start by discussing the client's artistic vision and listening to any references they have, ensuring I’m fully aligned with their needs. Once I have all the details, I record a simple demo and send it over in MP3 format to get feedback and see if we’re heading in the right direction. Once approved, I record the track professionally, leaving room for minimal revisions if the client desires. I love contributing creatively as a multifaceted artist.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: I have a well-equipped home studio where I produce and record. My setup includes an Antelope Edge Solo microphone paired with the Antelope Audio Zen Go interface. I use professional Peruvian cajones for recording and live performances, along with a MIDI keyboard, piano, and guitars that help me compose and produce music.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: I draw inspiration from a wide range of artists, from the soulful sounds of Susana Baca and Mercedes Sosa to the innovative styles of Rosalía, C. Tangana, and Billie Eilish. These artists inspire me to blend tradition with modernity in my own music.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: The most common work I do for my clients involves recording vocals, songwriting, and creating jingles. I’m also frequently asked to record the cajón, a powerful and unique instrument that adds a distinct flavor to tracks, especially since it's not something you hear every day.
