Interview with SEB'S
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: One project I’m particularly proud of is my recent work as a DJ, where I produced tracks that gained global recognition and were played at some of the biggest festivals around the world. DJ’s like Trym, I Hate Models, Pegassi, and many others have played my creations at major events, which was an incredible experience to see my music connect with such large audiences. Additionally, I had the opportunity to work closely with Universal Music to compose albums specifically for television and web media. This collaboration allowed me to explore different musical styles and create content that reached a wide audience through various media channels. These projects stand out because they showcase my versatility as a producer and my ability to create music for different platforms.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: At the moment, I’m working on several exciting projects. I’m composing tracks for a few DJs, focusing on creating dynamic and catchy beats that will resonate with dance floors. I’m also developing a studio complex, which involves setting up state-of-the-art equipment and designing an environment that will inspire creativity and collaboration. It’s an exciting time, as I’m balancing both the creative side of composition and the technical side of studio development.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Yes, I highly recommend a couple of talented professionals on SoundBetter that I’ve worked with or admire. First, Leo XVI is a virtuoso pianist and a genius when it comes to mastering chord progressions. He’s amazing for any composition or arrangement in Pop, Rock, or Jazz. His deep understanding of harmony and creativity makes him a standout choice for those genres. I would also recommend Isma Hill, a fantastic composer and producer specializing in Soul music. He has a great ability to bring emotion and depth to any project, and his understanding of the genre makes him a great fit for anyone looking for soulful compositions or productions.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Both analog and digital have their unique strengths, and I find that the best results come from blending the two. Analog equipment offers a warmth and character that’s hard to replicate, especially when it comes to things like tape machines or analog synths. It brings a certain richness and depth to sound. However, digital tools are incredibly versatile, precise, and efficient. With digital, you can manipulate sound in ways that are impossible with analog gear, and it allows for more flexibility in production. Ultimately, I use both depending on the project. For a classic, warm sound, I might lean toward analog, but for precision and flexibility, I’ll go digital. It’s all about finding the right balance to achieve the sound the artist and I are aiming for.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: My promise to my clients is that I will always work with dedication and attention to detail to bring their vision to life. I’ll listen carefully to their needs, provide expert advice when needed, and make sure we’re aligned every step of the way. I commit to delivering high-quality music that resonates with their audience, while ensuring a smooth and transparent collaboration throughout the process. Above all, I promise to be responsive, professional, and passionate about every project, no matter the size or genre.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: What I love most about my job is the ability to bring an artist's vision to life through sound. There's something incredibly rewarding about taking an idea, whether it’s just a melody, a rough demo, or a vague concept, and turning it into a polished track that resonates emotionally with listeners. I enjoy the creative process, the challenge of problem-solving, and the opportunity to experiment with different sounds and techniques. Every project is unique, and I love the fact that no two are the same, which keeps things exciting and constantly evolving.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: he most common question I get is: 'How long will it take to finish my project?' My answer is that it depends on the complexity of the project. For simple tracks, it may take a few days, but for larger projects with multiple elements, it could take weeks to perfect. I always make sure to discuss timelines upfront and set realistic expectations based on the scope of work. Another common question is: 'How many revisions do I get?' I offer free revisions for minor adjustments, but if there's a complete overhaul or a significant change in direction, there might be an additional fee. I always clarify this before starting the project, so the client understands the process and costs. Lastly, people often ask: 'What do you need from me to get started?' I tell them that the more details they provide about their vision, references, and goals, the better I can tailor my work to meet their expectations.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: One of the biggest misconceptions about my work is that people think music production is just about pushing buttons and applying presets. While technology plays a significant role, the real value lies in the creativity, experience, and attention to detail that go into every track. It's not just about making things sound good—it’s about understanding the artist’s vision and transforming it into a cohesive, emotionally resonant piece of music. Each project requires a thoughtful, hands-on approach, and there’s a lot of artistry involved, from shaping the sound to ensuring the track translates well across different platforms.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: When working with a new client, I like to ask a few key questions to ensure we're aligned on the vision and goals for the project: What is your overall vision for this track or project? – This helps me understand the direction you want to take and the mood you’re trying to convey. Are there any specific influences or reference tracks you'd like me to keep in mind? – This gives me a sense of the style or sound you're aiming for. What is the intended use for this music? – Whether it’s for commercial release, film, or other projects, this helps me tailor the production for the right purpose. What is your timeline for this project? – Knowing your deadlines helps me prioritize and plan accordingly. What is your budget for this project? – This helps set clear expectations and ensures we can create something amazing within the scope of your resources. By asking these questions, I can create a clearer, more detailed plan that helps us both get the best results from our collaboration.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: My advice would be to clearly communicate your vision and expectations from the start. The more details you provide about your goals, the better I can tailor my approach to your needs. It's also important to be open to collaboration and feedback, as creating a great track often involves a back-and-forth process. Lastly, trust the process—great music takes time to refine. If you're looking for a professional who is dedicated to elevating your sound, I’m here to bring your vision to life with the highest level of quality and attention to detail.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: If I were on a desert island and could only take five pieces of gear, I would choose the following: Laptop – This is essential for all production work, as I can run my DAW and software plugins to create music. Audio Interface – I would need a high-quality interface to connect my instruments and get great audio input/output. Headphones – A good pair of closed-back headphones would be crucial for mixing and ensuring the sound is accurate, especially in an isolated environment. Midi Controller – A versatile MIDI controller is essential for programming melodies and beats quickly. Portable Speaker – To listen to my mixes in a different setting and make sure they translate well in various environments. These five pieces of gear would allow me to work on music production, experiment with sounds, and stay productive even in the most remote setting.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: My career path began with a deep passion for music from a young age. I started playing instruments and experimenting with sound early on, which led me to study music production and audio engineering. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of working on a variety of projects, ranging from independent artist productions to collaborations with established labels. I have continually refined my skills and learned new techniques to stay at the forefront of the industry. My experience in both the creative and technical aspects of music production has helped me develop a unique approach to my work, allowing me to create high-quality tracks that resonate with listeners.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: I would describe my style as dynamic, polished, and emotionally-driven. I focus on creating music that is sonically rich, with a blend of modern production techniques and a strong sense of melody. My work often incorporates elements of pop and electronic music, but I like to experiment with different sounds and textures to create something unique. Ultimately, my goal is to capture the essence of the artist’s vision while delivering a polished, radio-ready track that resonates emotionally with listeners.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I would love to work with artists like Billie Eilish or The Weeknd. Both have a unique and innovative approach to music, blending genres in fresh ways and pushing the boundaries of sound. Their ability to create emotionally powerful songs with a distinct sonic identity is something I truly admire. I feel that my style, which focuses on creating a polished and dynamic sound, would complement their creative vision, and I would enjoy collaborating to explore new musical textures and ideas.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: One of the most important tips I can share is to always focus on the song's foundation first. Whether it's the rhythm, melody, or harmonies, make sure the core elements are strong and cohesive before adding extra layers of sound. A solid foundation will make mixing and mastering much easier, and will ensure that the track remains clear and balanced, no matter how many elements you add later.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I primarily work on pop and electronic music, but I’m versatile and enjoy exploring various genres. I often collaborate with artists who are looking for a polished, radio-ready sound, whether it's creating fresh tracks from scratch or refining existing material. My focus is on crafting songs that are emotionally engaging and sonically dynamic, with a strong attention to detail in the production, mixing, and mastering process.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: I would say my strongest skill is my ability to blend technical precision with creativity. Whether I’m producing, mixing, or mastering, I focus on making every element of a track work harmoniously, ensuring the song sounds both professional and emotionally impactful. I have a deep understanding of various genres, which allows me to adapt my approach to the artist’s style while bringing fresh ideas to the table. This combination of technical expertise and creativity helps me elevate each project and ensure the final product exceeds expectations.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring a combination of technical skills and creativity to every song I work on. My focus is on ensuring the track sounds polished, balanced, and emotionally engaging. Whether it's through production, mixing, or mastering, I make sure that every element serves the song's vision. I also bring a deep understanding of different genres, which allows me to adapt and enhance the song's character while maintaining its authenticity. My goal is always to elevate the track and help it reach its full potential, creating a distinctive sound while staying true to the artist's style.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: My typical work process begins with understanding the artist's vision and the mood they want to convey. I start by discussing the project in detail to make sure we are on the same page. Once I have a clear concept, I move on to the production phase, where I build the track, starting with the arrangement and foundational elements like drums, basslines, and melodies. I work closely with the artist to ensure the track reflects their style, then move on to mixing, adjusting levels, EQ, and effects to create a balanced and polished sound. After that, I proceed to mastering to make sure the track is ready for distribution, optimizing it for all listening environments. Throughout the process, I remain flexible and open to feedback, offering revisions as needed until the artist is completely satisfied.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: My studio is equipped with several professional tools to ensure optimal sound quality. I use a Trinnov Nova system for equalization and acoustic optimization, combined with Focal Trio 6 BE monitors, which allow me to achieve maximum precision in mixing. The room is acoustically treated to provide a controlled environment. For conversion, I use the RME ADI-2 Pro FS R, which offers high-quality audio conversion. In terms of instruments, I work with various Fender Stratocaster and Rickenbacker guitars, as well as a collection of Moog analog synthesizers to create unique and diverse sound textures.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I draw inspiration from many musicians and producers. Artists like Daft Punk and Calvin Harris have had a big influence on my approach to electronic music production with their innovative sound design and unique use of melody. I also find inspiration in legendary producers like Rick Rubin and Max Martin, who are masters at creating hits across different genres. Their ability to capture the essence of an artist while pushing the boundaries of sound motivates me to constantly experiment and evolve in my own work.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I primarily work on producing, mixing, and mastering tracks for artists in pop and electronic music. My typical process involves working closely with clients to refine their sound, whether it's creating new productions from scratch or enhancing their existing tracks with professional mixing and mastering. I focus on delivering high-quality work that aligns with the artist’s vision while ensuring the track is polished and radio-ready.
