Interview with Agustín Pugh
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: Tuve Suficiente - Reicaiga They had a very bare-bones demo that needed a lot of work and an extremely low budget, but we had a pretty clear vision of how it needed to sound. So I did most of the production myself, recorded all the guitars and bass, hired a session drummer, get them to re-record the vocals, and did all the editing, mixing, and mastering. The result was pretty epic and they loved it!
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Just finished mixing the new House Lights album, and started producing new songs for Santa García
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Pablo Alvarez Vilariño, best bass guitar player I know and a joy to work with!
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: The sound that is in my head, I'll get there anyway. I just work faster and more efficiently in Digital.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: That I will always be going to do my best for them.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Hearing the clients get happy and excited about the song is the best.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Q: How the hell did you do that?! A: The song is great!
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That we make everything sound poppy and steal money from our clients.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What is your vision? What do you wanna say to the world? What sounds do you like?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Try to make a connection with someone who respects you, understands your vision, and is willing to grow with you.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: My laptop and a pair of headphones it's all I really need.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I've been surrounded by music and art since I was a child, I play piano and guitar. I started studying music back in 2016, then discovered the world of production and mixing, and fell in love with it. I graduated as a Music Producer/Musician from EMC (Berklee Affiliate). I've been doing this professionally for 5 years now.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: I love emotional music that makes a statement.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I'd love to work with an artist with a fresh, clear vision that brings something new to the industry. Maybe that is you ;)
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Work fast, don't overthink and rest in between sessions. Reference with the best artists.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I work with a lot of different genres: punk, indie rock, pop, and pop punk. I love music with dense instrumentation and - in your face - vocals.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Making the song tell a story.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Clarity, energy, impact.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: If I'm going to mix, I first start by doing my prep. Create a session and keep it very organized, so that when it's time to mix, I can move fast and efficiently. I found that the less I "think", the more exciting the output. Also, it is extremely important to listen to the song, understand the vibe, and have a clear vision before moving any faders.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I have a pretty minimalist setup: Near-field monitors, headphones, an audio interface, and a couple of mics and instruments ready to go. For me, it's about maintaining an efficient and focused workflow.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I find great inspiration from artists like Green Day, Blink 182, State Champs, Silverstein, Bring Me The Horizon, Dua Lipa, Justin Bieber, Charlie Puth, and also producers like Zakk Cervini, Sam Guaiana, Chris Lord Alge, Tom Lord Alge, Serban Ghenea, and Manny Marroquin.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Mixing.
