Interview with Kelly Jean Torres

  1. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  2. A: I moved to Nashville in 2012 to develop my solo artist career, and fell even more in love with songwriting & recording! I still write and record music regularly.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: Recording more original music!

  5. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  6. A: I promise to do my best work, and to meet your needs as a client. Although I am an artist, I understand that I am working for you!

  7. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  8. A: I sincerely enjoy the creative process! It brings me joy.

  9. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  10. A: That it’s all fun and games. Yes, creative jobs are fun, but in order to create something well, the mind must remain in the present moment. It takes patience, openness, and real vulnerability to create.

  11. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  12. A: What is your timeline? Who is your audience? Is there anything specific you need from me as a writer/singer on the song?

  13. Q: How would you describe your style?

  14. A: Moody, quirky, fun!

  15. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  16. A: I would love to write and sing music for any one of the great film composers! Why? Because musically they create the most emotive, powerful music.

  17. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  18. A: Leave room for magic!

  19. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  20. A: Pop

  21. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  23. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  24. A: Emotion and truth.

  25. Q: What's your typical work process?

  26. A: My songwriting process begins with sitting at my piano, finding chord progressions that create the mood. When I've settled on the music, melody comes second, and finally lyrics. I spend the greatest amount of time perfecting lyrics, taking care to capture the emotion and direction of the song.

  27. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  28. A: My husband Eric Torres is a Grammy nominated recording engineer, and a 2x #1 record producer. He works full-time out his professional studio. All of my vocals will be recorded by him, in our professional studio. For more info visit: www.thecouchroom.com

  29. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  30. A: I'm most inspired by music composers like Hans Zimmer, John Williams.

  31. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  32. A: Songwriting, and recording vocals!

  33. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  34. A: I'm very proud of my work on my most recent original EP, "How We Really Feel." I stayed true to myself as a songwriter, and told my story. I wrote all of the songs solo, and did all of the vocals.
