Interview with Kai Lee

  1. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  2. A: After having had piano lessons as a little child and being surrounded by music , I’ve started as a DJ in the 80‘s. Funk, Soul, HipHop, Reggae and Pop. In the late 80’s I got into producing hiphop beats with an Ensoniq EPS Sampler for local rappers. Due to the lack of isolated basslines on records to sample from, I had to learn playing bassguitar myself. This led me to playing Funk , Reggae and Rock Music in bands as a bass player. Some time later I happened to produce a demo with a local rapper wich instantly became a big Hit in germany. So from there I was hired as a coproducer, musician and recording and mixing engineer at „click music“ studios in 1997 where I had the pleasure to work with international artists and producers on numerous gold and platinum productions. Today I am working freelanced as a mixing-, mastering-and recording engineer and producer for artists and production companies.

  3. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  4. A: Can you make me sound like „...“? I will give all my best but keep in mind that every voice is different and needs different treatment.

  5. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  6. A: I ask for the artist‘s vision.

  7. Q: How would you describe your style?

  8. A: It depends on the style of music

  9. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  10. A: I am well experienced in many genres.

  11. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  12. A: All my best to make it sound professional.

  13. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  14. A: Laptop, Microphone, Guitar, Keyboard and VitaMix Blender.

  15. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  16. A: I am sure Soundbetter is a plattform where you can find great and inspiring professionals.

  17. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  18. A: I still use analog equipment from time to time, but in many cases I prefer mixing in the box.

  19. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  20. A: Aiming for the best result possible!

  21. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  22. A: The more care and effort you put in your production there more I can get out of it. I can do a lot but no magic.

  23. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  24. A: If possible, try to avoid recording sound or chosing sounds that don’t convice you. Also prefer sounding unique instead of sounding like your idol or somebody else.

  25. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  26. A: That every Mix is a new experience and challenge.

  27. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  28. A: Mixing, Editing and Recording.

  29. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  30. A: There are so many. Hard to tell who’s THE ONE.

  31. Q: What's your typical work process?

  32. A: The Mixing Process changes all the time depending on the material, the song or just my mood. Usually I start with what makes the core elements of the particular song.

  33. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  34. A: I am working in the box with Avid Pro Tools and some analog Gear.

  35. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  36. A: Mixing, Mastering, Editing and Recording.

  37. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  38. A: Any kind of music inspirers me. I don‘t look for producers Names so I can‘t tell. But I’ve worked a lot with Pete Smith who produced records for Sting, Joe Cocker, Randy Crawford and many others. He was a brilliant teacher for me.
