Emily Coomber on SoundBetter

Hi, I'm Emily! I'm a trained singer (BA in performance music) with more than a decade of experience as a session singer, performer, song-writer and vocal arranger. I specialise in soul, pop, jazz, and writing vocal arrangements. I have a wealth of musical knowledge to draw from, and always bring quality and creativity to the table.

I have worked as a lead vocalist and session singer with all kinds of different bands and producers, from jazz and a-capella groups, to pop, soul and funk.

My background in jazz has given me an extensive knowledge of music theory and harmony, and I put that to great use when writing music and vocal arrangements. I specialise in writing vocal arrangements for both backing vocals on pop songs as well as stand-alone a capella arrangements.

I can deliver smooth, emotional and soulful vocals, but I can also sing energetically with a raw and punchy sound.
If you listen through the samples of my material you'll hear a range of different styles and influences.

I've toured and played hundreds of shows across The Netherlands and Europe.

I approach each new project with thoughtfulness and creativity, and love discovering new music and bringing people's ideas to life. Singing with feeling and finding the best way to interpret the melody and lyrics are very important to me.
I would love to hear about your project and how I could be involved!

Emily gave me incredible sensitive vocals. She didn't miss a note and it was all perfectly in tune. She even supplied extra takes. I would definitely recommend her!

Interview with Emily Coomber

  1. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  2. A: Last year I slowly started releasing my own music on Spotify, and that's what I'm working on at the moment. It's scary but very exciting!

  3. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  4. A: Probably! I'm very new here, so I still need time to explore this platform fully... Watch this space

  5. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  6. A: A guitar and a piano

  7. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  8. A: I've been doing music full-time for more than 10 years. I moved to The Netherlands from New Zealand at age 18, studied jazz at the Amsterdam Conservatory, and since I graduated in 2009 I've been lucky enough to be able to keep on living in The Netherlands and making a career out of music.

  9. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  10. A: Becca Stevens - she is so honest and super musical. I love the way she describes her creative process and she always manages to inspire me to approach a song or an idea from a different angle. To work with her in real life would be a dream.

  11. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  12. A: I tend to work on music with a more open, soulful sound, but I recently started working with a German band and they have sent me plenty of raw funk songs to work on which is full of energy and a lot of fun.

  13. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  14. A: I'm creative, musical and a perfectionist! I want everything I send out to be captivating and sound great, so I do what it takes to get it to that level.

  15. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  16. A: It depends on the feeling of the song of course, but in general I bring a warm, soulful energy to the songs I sing. I love bringing intense emotion to the songs I sing, depending on what's required.

  17. Q: What's your typical work process?

  18. A: When it comes to recording a top line: As soon as I have the information I need about the song, I listen to it several times to find the right mood, learn the melody and lyrics, and get a general feel for the music. Then I get right to work and record a few takes to see which direction works best. Once I'm happy with that, I do the final take/takes and then let it settle for a few hours or a day before listening again and making sure I'm happy with the result. The same goes for backing vocals. I absolutely love layering all the parts and hearing how they blend together.

  19. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  20. A: I have an iMac from 2019, with the latest version of Logic Pro X and an apogee duet interface. My mic is a Neumann condensor microphone. I have a dedicated music studio in my apartment, with all my gear and instruments set up and ready to play/record.

  21. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  22. A: I absolutely love Becca Stevens, and Lianne La Havas... Their musicality, sound and drive are incredibly inspiring to me.

  23. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  24. A: As far as studio work goes I do a lot of top-line work (lead vocals) and backing vocals. I also help people write lyrics and melodies for their songs if they get stuck. For my live performances I do either my own music (originals) or I'm booked for big corporate events to sing a my repertoire of Jazz, Soul and Bossa.
