Kim from Midnight Soldier is awesome to work with! She listens and makes sure she understands what the project requires stylistically before providing good quality scratch tracks for review. Her communication is excellent throughout. Her vocals are superb and the final vocal tracks provided are of a professional high quality standard. I highly recommend working with Kim and look forward to working with her again on another project!

Amazing work! The service was prompt and professional. The quality was wonderful. Vocally, she kicked it out of the park. She went beyond our expectations. We will definitely be working with her again in the future!

Interview with Kim C.

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: The first time I wrote to a brief and realized: wow I can do this for a living! Opened a world of possibilities. I was the topliner and vocalist.

  3. Q: How would you describe your style?

  4. A: I love playing with different aspects of my voice, but if I'm writing for myself, I'd say a female version of Imagine Dragons.

  5. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  6. A: Adapting to different styles and the ability to bring in genuine emotion as well as dialing it in a way that best serves the song.

  7. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  8. A: I can bring a warm velvety tone or a rockier edgier sound. You will definitely get emotion and texture. I have a soft spot for songs with sass or attitude where I can go all out!

  9. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  10. A: Finalizing a sports promo project and selecting songs for my artist EP.

  11. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  12. A: Not really sure..

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: What the turnaround time is. It can vary depending on the project and my availability, but it doesn't typically take over 10 days.

  15. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  16. A: Music was always part of my life but it truly became my life just over 10 years ago when I uprooted to Bahrain to be a full time live entertainer. For roughly 7 years I toured in rock and top 40 show bands in various Middle eastern and South east asian countries until I decided to come back Montreal so I could shift my focus on creating music. I then started writing and composing geared towards sync licensing, built a home studio and here I am. I still love performing live and it also keeps me up to date with what people are listening to.

  17. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  18. A: Again so many! but I would have to say p!nk because she is such an all around bad ass. Not only is she a gifted musician and songwriter, she is an exceptional entertainer.

  19. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  20. A: I work on many different styles a lot of which falls under the pop umbrella and also have been working on some rock with a hip hop flair.

  21. Q: What's your typical work process?

  22. A: Once I have all the audio files and info I need (guide track, ref tracks, inst.), I pull them into my session and listen to everything carefully to get a good feel of the vibe of the song. I will map out the arrangement and get a couple instinctive takes in if toplining before diving deeper into the lyrics. After laying down the foundation, I will circle back to the client to make sure I'm on the right path to what they want and will keep that communication going throughout the process to make sure we're always on the same page.

  23. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  24. A: That I will give your project my all, sing wholeheartedly and keep the communication flowing to make sure we're always on the same page.

  25. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  26. A: What's the intention for the song (demo, sync, artist release, etc) and what their deadline is.

  27. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  28. A: To send 1 or 2 reference tracks that reflect the type of vibe and vocals you are looking for. If there's something specific you like about a ref. track it's also good to communicate that. Also include a guide track if you just need a part to be re-sung.

  29. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  30. A: Human connections! I find it inspiring to collaborate with others on projects.

  31. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  32. A: An acoustic guitar...and assuming I magically have wifi and electricity: my laptop, microphone, interface and midi controller

  33. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  34. A: Hands down Kris Bradley! you can find her under BoomFox Productions. She's my mentor and production teacher.

  35. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  36. A: Mix of both. But digital is definitely more accessible for home studio owners like me and I just love the endless creative possibilities a good digital toolbox has to offer.

  37. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  38. A: I use a Vanguard V-13 tube mic, Apollo Twin interface and Logic Pro X to track my vocals. Melodyne 5 for tuning.

  39. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  40. A: OMG so many! I love and admire artists and musicians who's sound is in constant evolution. P!nk, Imagine Dragons, James Bay are great examples. I'm only recently diving deeper into music production and get inspired by the Songland crew: Ryan Tedder, Ester Dean & Shane McAnally. Junkie XL, John Nathaniel. Although I especially get inspired by others who are creating broadcast quality music from their home studios. Kris Bradley from Boomfox productions taught me most of what I know in the studio! An amazing mentor.

  41. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  42. A: Vocals and toplines for sync.
