Live instruments embracing vocals, adding punch, fatness, direction, character.
I’m a music producer specializing in live instruments, with a broad background in live performance. I perform trumpet, trombone, and tuba, and frequently hire in vocals, rhythm instruments, French horn, woodwinds, and strings. When projects call for it, I also work with less common instruments such as accordion, tabla, and African vocals and instruments.
I engage with the artist’s demo, guide, and reference tracks to grasp their vision, then create live, human performances that serve the song and enhance its expression and impact. The soul that live instruments bring can range from subtle fairy dust to structural or even transformative changes.

check_circleVerifiedAs always, William is a professional and comes up with ideas that perfectly fit your composition.
check_circleVerifiedWilliam’s an unbelievably great player. William picked a great sounding horn for this kind of warm, indie type acoustic track. The parts he came up with were interesting, but restrained when they needed to be, and overall helped to lift up every other aspect of the song. 10/10 you should hire William
check_circleVerifiedAs per his usual, William has yet again done a brilliant job on his part. Highly recommend his services!
check_circleVerifiedWillam and crew did an absolutely superb job. Section was nicely in tune and their arrangement was super funky. 10/10!

Interview with WILLIAM HAUBRICH
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: They ask about revisions: revisions are handled thoughtfully on every project and are discussed clearly before work begins. LIVE INSTRUMENT PROJECTS What's Included... •. Multiple musical phrases or variations, giving you flexibility to choose, adjust, or omit elements •. Minor edits and timing adjustments using the recorded material. What Counts as a Revision... •. Significant changes to the track (tempo, form, key, or arrangement) •. Requests for entirely new parts after delivery. These situations usually require a new recording session and may involve an additional fee. Typical Outcome... Large revisions are rare, as most artists find what they’re looking for in the initial delivery. FULL PRODUCTION PROJECTS For full production work, revisions are a normal and expected part of the process, implemented predictably across several stages. The scope and timing of revisions are always discussed clearly before work begins.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: My promise is to bring a rare combination of musical knowledge, taste, and technical skill to every project. The live instruments, scoring, and performances I provide don’t just fill space — they make songs feel alive, finished, and memorable. Whether it’s horns that pop, subtle textures that enhance emotion, or balance and clarity in a crowded mix, my work helps artists stand out in a world of interchangeable, instant productions.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: Many people underestimate the value of craft, depth, and intuition in music production. Unlike the instantaneous, frictionless, and limitless options now widely available, live musicianship and careful scoring bring nuance, emotional resonance, and intentionality that can’t be replicated automatically.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: I ask questions that help me understand the artist’s vision and goals: How do you want the track to feel? What emotions or dynamics are most important? How can live instruments best support your song’s arrangement and bring nuance, life, and breath to the performance? These conversations guide my approach and ensure the final result aligns closely with your intent.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Look for a provider who truly understands live instruments, because skilled, expressive performances add nuance, warmth, and emotional depth that technology alone cannot replicate. Working with musicians who interpret your vision ensures your track has the human element that makes it feel complete and alive.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I began as a performer, focusing on brass instruments across orchestral, jazz, contemporary, African, world, and folk music. Over time, my work expanded into scoring, including orchestrations, jazz ensembles, and contemporary styles. Roughly half of my production work now goes beyond horn stacks, encompassing full song production with live musicians, arrangements, and collaborative direction.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: I specialize in translating demos, reference tracks, and musical ideas into performances that capture the artist’s intent while adding a poetic, distinctive touch. With patience, attention to detail, and collaborative flexibility, I ensure every part fits naturally into the arrangement, giving a track brightness, depth, and a sense of completeness. Clear, responsive communication allows me to understand the artist’s goals thoroughly, so the result reflects their vision precisely.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My strongest skill is the ability to combine arranging and performance in service of a song, bringing both human nuance and musical judgment to every part. I also excel at coordinating a top-tier pool of musicians and, above all, understanding and translating an artist’s vision into fully realized performances.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Many tracks struggle to feel complete, no matter how polished the writing or production. I help artists and producers add the human element and musical judgment that bring clarity, emotion, and cohesion to their work. Through live instruments and carefully scored parts, I translate demos and references into performances that feel warm, precise, and fully realized — often elevating songs well beyond their starting point.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: LIVE INSTRUMENT PROJECTS I begin with a clear proposal outlining options and quoting the most likely approach. My aim is always to deliver parts that fit the track beautifully on the first pass. To support this, I work closely with the artist upfront, gathering clear direction through references, descriptions, MIDI, or vocal sketches. This allows me to make confident musical decisions early, so extensive revisions are rarely needed. When helpful, I may create a brief MIDI mock-up after funding (as described in the proposal) to confirm direction before tracking. While not ideal for every project, this can be an effective way to align expectations for certain clients. Once direction is confirmed, I track parts individually, bringing in additional musicians as needed. I deliver clean, dry stems with a sync pop, and for larger horn stacks I often include a rough, horn-forward mix for reference. FULL PRODUCTION Full production projects are more involved and vary depending on the scope. Typically, MIDI mock-ups are created and approved before any live instrument tracking. This approach saves time and cost while giving both the client and my team flexibility throughout the process.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I love the synergy that comes from collaborating with talented artists and musicians. Seeing ideas evolve into fully realized, expressive performances and hearing how everyone’s contributions complement each other is incredibly rewarding.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Seek expert advice.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I record in a professionally treated, purpose-built space using a curated signal chain I know intimately, delivering warm, clean tracks that stack naturally with minimal processing. Larger sessions — rhythm sections, strings, choirs, orchestras, and more — are recorded in larger top-flight studios.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Although my profile emphasizes live horns, much of my work involves full song production built around live musicians. I help artists shape organic, expressive arrangements with a strong sense of intimacy and emotional clarity, drawing on experience across contemporary, folk, jazz, world, and orchestral music.
