Interview with Bigi
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: Instinct only goes so far, the technical know how is the edge. A good ear for music is helped by understanding why exactly the music works and how to use technology - deliberately - to enhance it correctly. I have spent a lot of time learning about sound and audio engineering so I can understand and be very deliberate at what I do, which helps in achieving a great outcome.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Mixing and eq-ing - making the music work with the vocals and finding that point they gel to sound fantastic!
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: You can feel it when you have it right. Otherwise, walk away and come back rested, and those frustrating problems you were flummoxed by before are suddenly solvable because you are listening differently.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: We are working together for a successful outcome for you, the more information to dial in what we need for that successful outcome, the smoother our efforts will go.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: They are tools to channel the dream - whatever suits the outcome. My studio has both.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: We'll get it where you want it.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: 23 years rapping, making beats, recording and mixing and mastering.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I am writing, producing and mixing my 7th studio album.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Nes Mburu - fantastic producer and artist. Loves music and does it well.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Ideas are malleable - sometimes where you end up is not where you thought, but it's far better and more impactful. Sometimes where you end up is exactly where you wanted to go, and it is as you envisioned.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: We talk the project through.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Hip-hop, afrobeat, pop
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Energy and life
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Shure SM 7b with a Cloudlifter CL1, Mackie Onyx 400F, Sony ZX headphones and my Mac Pro.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Experimental, very open minded.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: A$AP Rocky and Kacey Musgraves on the same song with a deadmau5 beat - I want to work with everyone who loves music ...
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: It's those very innovative ones who color outside the lines that I pay attention to and get inspired by.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Beatmaking, recording and mixing and mastering. I love the detail work that results in a great song. I help find the spark that reveals the heart of the song.
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I have written, produced, arranged and mixed all my albums. Worked on hundreds of songs and created over 300 beats. Every project is special, I never take any for granted.
